JKR both doesn't really understand what people like about the HP series and also apparently isn't capable of recreating it outside of the familiar structure of boarding school stories, where she has a remarkably deft and charming touch. I guess people like her mystery novels so maybe she's good at other genres besides boarding school stories, but the point is, she really needs to work within an existing structure and aesthetic. And she's not doing that - she's nowhere near as good at doing interwar thriller drama, which I guess is how you would describe the genre of the Fantastic Beasts series, probably because it's not nearly as distinct a genre as the other ones she's dealt with, it doesn't have as many hooks or as tight a structure, and she probably isn't as deeply familiar with it.

i'm still baffled why she didn't stick with what seemed to be the formula for the first one, "low stakes" adventures where people get to see monsters and places that might have been alluded to but were never shown before. each movie could have had whatshisface finding some fuckery caused by some obscure magical bullshit and trying to fix things through compassion & his intricate knowledge of magical beasts.

like at what point was she like... no, this needs to be a sprawling EPIC.

When I watched the first one and they introduced the whole 'obscural' thing I thought 'oh, I see where this is going! Newt will decide he's going to try and find a cure for obscurals and it's going to involve him traveling the world discovering different amazing magical creatures and meeting new people. That should be pretty fun.' I think my idea was better than what we got.

I mean.... it's kind of the same thing she did with the later books in the original series. So maybe we should have seen this coming.

To be fair, it doesn't seem to take much more than "have a big name" and/or "can write a mildly interesting mystery at all" to get far in the mystery genre, judging from other bestsellers.

Which is why it makes sense that anyone can actually stand her mystery novels, considering they’re terrible.

Exactly. I weep for mystery novel lovers.

yeah, a friend recommended one to me and... maybe they got something personal out of it that I didn't, but it was just so unpleasant?? and like... Agatha Christie she's not.
