I've been watching a lot of younger people's reaction youtubes to old Doctor Who and I have been pleasantly surprised to find that when they came to the Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy era that they completely love the campiness of it all. One of them even called Mel her favourite companion because she was so energetic and upbeat. It is such a change from how we miserable oldies viewed it at the time. It is wonderful, it truly is. The kids are gonna be all right.

I grew up with the Doctor Who omnibus on UK Gold as my main way of accessing the show, plus the occasional repeat on BBC2. Sylvester McCoy's Doctor is actually one of my earliest TV memories because I was very young during his tenure and my parents love to tell me about how I thought Kandyman was Bertie Basset (not exactly a reach, it's very...not far off.)

Anyway, I was shocked as an adult to find out Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy's eras are so reviled. I liked quite a few serials from both. Admittedly, I've watched everything since my childhood and there are some stories from all Doctors where I can see "ah, this is why this isn't good" (btw, Timelash is 100% bad) but I also just feel really sorry for Colin Baker in particular who loved the opportunity and was given basically nothing he actually wanted, including the costume. And yet he and McCoy continue to be lovely about the show despite surely knowing they still get a critical kicking. It's nice that the kids are embracing those two in the context of their era.
