I think the marketing was misleading and I can't stand what they did to shift the focus - as such, I think the idea was ill-conceived as a continuation. But then, I haven't wanted to watch anything Terminator past The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so perhaps I'm the wrong audience. I just generally ignore the entire existence of Salvation, Genisys, and Dark Fate (and, okay, sometimes parts of Rise of the Machines).

The suckitude of Terminator Genisys made me completely uninterested in checking this out, so I think it had a bit more to fight against besides the anti-woke crowd.

I know what you mean about Genesys, but I'd advise giving Dark Fate a try. It kinda... has the feel of the first two movies? Dug into who Sarah Connor was as a person? It made for a satisfying conclusion to the series for me.

did you actually watch genisys or did you watch the trailer and get mad? (genuine question.)

I liked the movie a lot. Really great movie, would watch again, everyone in it is super hot, A++.

But honestly, I don't think marketing or timing or stuff like that really had anything to do with its performance. I think people just generally don't care that much about Terminator as a franchise. It's not like Salvation, Genesys, or Sarah Connor Chronicles did really fantastic or made a long-lasting impression that stuck in peoples' minds. People care about the original because it's a very unique, very 80s sci-fi classic, and they care about T2 because it's one of the 5 best action movies ever made. People just don't really care about the deep lore or the continuity of the Terminator universe, or using the franchise as a vehicle for telling new stories.

Sarah Connor Chronicles was fucking awesome and I wish more people had watched it. It feels like everyone who did watch it loved it (though it ends on a cliffhanger), just that's not so many people.

Co-fucking-signed. It's still one of my favorite shows of all time. Granted, it's getting a little dated at this point, but that's just how media works. It was so damn good.

I almost, sort of like that it ended on a cliffhanger. I mean, it's painful AF, but also, it means it's stayed in my head way more than it would've if we'd gotten closure. IDK, sometimes I hate that it ended on a cliffhanger, because OMG WE'RE NEVER GETTING MORE I CANNOT STAND IT I COULD LITERALLY RUN AMOK!!! But other times I'm glad for it, because it means the story is still alive in my imagination all these years later.

Spoilers for the movie herein, obviously

I haven't seen it (yet) so I can't say for sure, but I feel like killing John was just an absolutely horrible decision that was bound to alienate most fans of the franchise.

I'm a woman, I'm a feminist, I love badass women and I love movies about badass women. But Sarah's love for her son, and her total commitment to protecting him was, IMO, the heart and soul of the story, to the point that it feels like a grave misunderstanding of the first two movies to think you can just kill him off and still have a story to tell. If you kill John, you no longer have a story--not because John was the savior of humanity, but because Sarah Connor's drive to protect her son is the core of the story, and if you kill him, you don't just kill him--you irrevocably gut Sarah Connor, and you burn the heart out of your whole story.

I could understand "What if John died" as the premise for a bleak one-shot fanfic, but I think what you make it canon, in a whole-ass theatrical installment of the franchise, it's just...bleak in a way that is kind of impossible to move past.

This! I was having a hard time articulating what it was about John's death that made ne turn off the movie (beyond the child death), but you hit the nail on the head.

i hadn't thought about this when considering why i didn't like the movie initially (there were a handful of reasons i can't think of at the moment because it's 3:40am) but i do agree that killing john off immediately killed the heart of the story for this one. i'd been very excited to see sarah back but wasn't thrilled to see her the way we ended up getting her.

I think it was a lot of different issues (marketing, timing, spoiler one of anons talking about etc), but damn everyone were so hot in this movie

(Anonymous) 2022-04-20 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
genisys was a better movie, argue with the wall. (yes, i am serious about liking genisys.)

in all seriousness, i don't know, this was fine. i liked seeing sarah back, i liked the new characters. the movie was produced by the people behind my favorite show of all time. i should have loved it. but the more i think about the story the more annoyed i get.

I have no taste in movie, generally, and I like what enterntain me the most. I liked this movie A LOT, but in a very horny way. Everyone was so fucking hot and my lesbian heart couldn't take it. I remember NOTHING about the story, so it probably sucked, but I had a real blast watching it.
I've been a fan of Terminator saga since the early 2000s and I've enjoyed all the movies and the show BUT Terminator Salvation. That movie is fucking awful and boring.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-20 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
god, thank you. the only parts i liked about salvation were the worldbuilding, kyle, and the woman who found the terminator

(Anonymous) 2022-04-20 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It had a really cool vibe and got the closest to that dangerous, on-the-edge "Terminator" feel since T2, but the writing was still kind of a mess.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There is no timeline where fucking over Sarah and John Connor would go down well with the Terminator fans.
