I'm reluctant to tackle translated novels but I might have to try this series because just watching the adaptations is confusing as hell.

Well, reading the novels probably isn't going to help with that. (I'm sorry.) They're a lot of fun, though!

The early novels are licensed and up on Amazon kindle (though the translater... makes some choices.) After that, merebear has a metric ton of unofficial, pretty good translations.

SA (Uh, bear in mind that the first book in the series was written by someone who didn't know he was starting a series and hadn't much experience with writing. It's a little rough. They do get better.)

LOL, oh well. I guess I'd hoped the novels would fill in some details that the adaptations don't seem to explain but so much is just casually dropped into the plot like oh yeah, [big weird thing] happened, etc. etc. Thanks for the rec, I'll check out the unofficial translations!

I mean, they fill in some details, but they're not in strict continuity with the dramas, either, and they ramble a bit.

I've seen all the dramas and read most of the books - if you've got a specific question I might be able to answer it?

It's a story about tomb-raiders. Kind of like Indiana Jones, only a really, really long serialised story. (The books are incredibly salty. The dramas, slightly less salty and with a whole lot more unspoken pining on the part of two of the leads.)

They're dead fun, but incredibly chaotic and a bit confusing.

Lots of swearing. The main character is far more interested in money than his drama counterpart (who firmly believes that cultural relics belong in a museum, right from the start). There's even more scatological humour, and more cynicism.

Still a good read, just a slightly different flavour than the dramas.

Also, the books are written in the form of a first-person journal and book!Wu Xie misses *no opportunity* to drag his own arse and make himself look like a clown. (He's very self-deprecating.)
