Yeah, I feel like it's very much not supposed to be the side we're on. She and Briggs just happen to be very badass.

We're mostly supposed to be on Ed's side. Mostly, because a lot of times it's obvious that he's a child (and a non-Ishvalan one when it comes to those topics), but overall the ideas that Olivier believes aren't supposed to be "right." She does, after all, call her brother soft for choosing to stop committing war crimes and Mustang's group soft for trying to decrease casualties during the coup.

As for fandom, OP, I think it's more of an instance of current fandom actually enjoying a flawed character. If you feel you can't criticize her, you need to explore the fandom a bit more/branch out, because even her big fans in the parts I'm in do understand that she's not the best. You can like her and understand she's very flawed.

I never got far enough in Brotherhood to see much of Olivier, but everything I've seen in the fandom since she first appeared indicated that the fandom at least thinks she's supposed to be loved for being a badass. Nothing about her being a badass antagonist, just a straight up badass girlboss who is better than all your weak female faves. But then, fandom ruining characters by reading them wrong until the fanon reading overtakes canon is pretty standard fandom stuff.

She IS a badass, and she ended up on the right side, but she's neither an antagonist nor a hero. None of the members of the military were or are heroes, but some of them did the right thing in the end. If you don't like her, that's fine, she's a minor character, but she's not a villain OR a hero.

Because...she's not an antagonist. She's not a great person, and definitely is fucked up and fascist, but she's not an antagonist.
