Gardening groups. There are few groups of people as blind to science and change as gardeners. Our ecosystems are dying, maybe plant native species for your area and stop using insecticide everywhere? Or worse still fake grass that leaves carcinogens in the soil and kills all the life under it?

I can mostly hold my tongue and be politely informative. Now and again though my temper has gotten me banned.

I'm guilty of planting non native stuff alongside native plants, but even with ever worsening drought here astroturf seems like a horrible idea even from an aesthetic standpoint (I don't know whether to cheer for the (also non-native) weeds poking through the poorly maintained stuff because at least they're alive) but definitely from an environmental one.

Also, if I had the money to waste on the least fake looking astroturf, I'd spend it on more native drought tolerant groundcovers, or cobbles, or pea gravel.

Just about the only use I can see for fake grass is for sports fields that see constant use.

Where I am, there is such a strong prejudice against native plants that it's ridiculous. Some gardeners are stuck in a perfect lawn with annual border plants mentality. A few houses down from me lives a guy who will go out into the public area behind us and spray wild plants he dislikes with glysophate because he doesn'tlike the sight of them'. It's UNHINGED.

At the same time our ecosystems are some of the most stressed in the world.

Anyway, it's those people I'm referring to really. We have a few non-natives, although I try to keep it to plants I have a use for like lavender.

SA And yes, completely agree about fake grass. My only issue with it being used even then is the long term health effects we're likely to see in a few decades from kids playing on it now.
