I think it is better-than-even odds that the stories are less interesting than the songs. Taylor is a good songwriter! That's what good songwriters do. (I think the exception is really if the conspiracy theorists are right.)

Just judging by “Dear John,” there was plenty to tell.

But then she'd lose the plausible deniability that allows her to maintain the illusion of taking the higher road.

I don't think that's really her vibe anymore at this point

(Anonymous) 2022-04-21 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Is writing a call out song every time you break up with someone 'taking the high road'?

The story behind it is a load of male pale and stale writers worked out what would make for some absolute bangers, and wrote that.

Tired bitter sour grapes take.

Also just blatantly factually incorrect, and pretty sexist.

i can write it for you right now, if you like

"i had a fight with my boyf"

(Anonymous) 2022-04-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)

who was the boyf and what did they fight about INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW

Some bland dude and it's petty shit, probably. I agree with everyone who's saying the ~mystery is the main charm.

My Conspiracy Theory

When she was with Big Machine records (or whatever it was called) she had a clause in her contract that kept her from speaking on political issues. She signed not too long after the fallout that The Chicks experienced and given that she started squarely in the country music realm I think they were worried about her speaking out in a way that might cause backlash even though the perspective of the fallout relating to The Chicks has really shifted to be more favorable toward them

I'll definitely grab a copy of her autobiography when she eventually released one, but I honestly don't expect a ton of tea from it.

She's a phenomenal songwriter, but a big part of that is her ability to capture the drama of an emotional experience regardless of the relative mundanity of the actual events.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of hers really (I might catch a song of hers on the radio), but I'll definitely agree that what makes her songs bangers is what you mentioned,

"... her ability to capture the drama of an emotional experience regardless of the relative mundanity of the actual events."

If you manage to write an emotional hit about spilling your coffee (but no one knows it was about spilling your coffee), I think you have some serious skill lol
