Oh, that's on my tbr list! I look forward to 'meeting' the ship.

They're also second cousins. I imagine that's the dealbreaker here.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Do people really get squicked about second cousins? I mean, just personally, I do not care for incest one bit, but second cousins doesn't bother me at all.

Somewhere, someone is crying softly to themselves about the fact that if you go back far enough all humans share a common ancestor.

So yeah, some people are squicked by second cousins.

My great-grandparents were second cousins (so they admitted as much) and I have almost no contact with my own very few cousins, so it's not much of a squick for me. (Not to mention that slightly removed incest wasn't uncommon until maybe only 100 years ago?) But when I was taking Anthropology 101 and my class heard about Darwin marrying his first cousin? DUDE. They wouldn't let go of it until the semester was over. I always figured they had a lot of cousins around all their lives.

Another time I was on a message board and talked about how someone wrote Dear Abby or Ann Landers (don't remember) saying how bad they felt about wanting to be a couple because they were 7th cousins. Abby(?) rightly, to my mind, told them they were being idiots and that basically everyone is related if you track far enough back (and therefore get over the cousins thing and get together). When I mentioned this one of my fellow posters who I assume must have a family tree going back to the Founding Fathers got horrified at the idea of hooking up with her 7th cousin. I gotta say this squick seems to be personal-experience based.

I live in a very rural area so I think the cousins taboo got here late. I know a few first cousin couples in their 60s or older and nobody thinks anything of it, but only one couple younger than that, so it's definitely here now! But it was super, super common to marry your cousins because they were the only "available" partner in a lot of places, or the nearest "available" opposite-sex person you were likely to actually meet with as teens or adults in a lot of others. Now that's all gone in most of the world, so no more cousin marriage.

And where I'm from is isolated enough that everyone is kind of related if you really want to go that far back, so for the sake of everyone's sanity no one keeps track more than two or three generations deep. Well, unless there are grudges involved. Taboos around dating a fifth cousin twice removed may be subjective, but property disputes are eternal and immutable.

7th cousin? Wtf even is that my brain can't even compute lol

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've been in a fandom where people lost their shit over shipping a pair (which was a popular ship at the start of the series) who's parents got married way later in the series - and screeched about how it was as good as incest and shipping them meant that you were an evil person who probably thought that way of their own siblings irl. So yeah I think anything is possible when its can be vaguely seen as incest.

Ughhh see ..shit like this is why people hate antis.

Like God they're fictional characters. Quit being so dramatic.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
We're in fandom. Drama. Gives. Us. LIFE!!!

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Debatable. Some of us just wanna make fanwork in peace and don't like to deal with drama about it.

Oh, sweetie. You are in the wrong place.

Look I don't mind other kinds of drama but the problem with antis is that their behavior tends to be a serious problem. Bullying, harassment campaigns, discords where mods are showing minors "gross art" (showing NSFW to minors is still not cool even if you're telling them its bad) the list goes on.

Antis are more than drama they are a problem.

Yeah, this. Calling it “drama” is incorrect.
