You're not telling them they can't post there or even engaging in the posted fic with rude comments, so you're entitled to be silently annoyed.

Somebody in my fandom posted some awful Tumblr shit along the lines ofam 'Imagine character A eating gummy worms, while character B smiles lovingly at them (heart eye emoji)'. As a fic. To AO3.

The other day I clicked on a fic and found it was just a list of a sequence of events. I thought: You're so close, just fill in around them a little bit and you'll have a story! I don't know if that's too much effort or what...

I don't think this is a bad gripe at all! The whole point of formatting is for the ease of the reader. Formatting is meant to be uniform so as to not trip up the flow of things and to make reading the text easy to follow. It's not the time or place to try and make things look interesting. And I similarly can't stand it. Sometimes I can grit my teeth through other SPAG but not this! It's just so in your face...and ugly. It doesn't look good to boot.

I think there's a large difference between "old woman yelling at cloud" and "hey, uh, part of the point of certain conventions is so you don't make the reading experience suck out the gate" and we're allowed to have Opinions about it. I don't know why everyone is always so touchy about it.

And as a final note it's EASIER to format it the "normal" way. You people have to go OUT OF YOUR WAY to make it look like that WHY WHY WHYYYYYyyyy...

I don't know if it's my English language privilege showing, but sometime I run across fic that are well written, and totally up my alley but the dialogue is written

there, there, OP, it's alright, get it off your chest. We've all been there. XD It's good to vent sometime! I have a few petty, unreasonable things I hate about some fic, I have nobody to tell about them (without sounding like a total Grinch), and it eats me from the inside.

As for the formatting, SAME. Somehow, these wrong-as-a-choice fics are more annoying to me than usual SPAG fails. I don't encounter it often, but I've read at least one fic that had a really intriguing premise but was written in full lowercase, with non-standard quotemarks, spaces around punctuation and I. WHY. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT.

I'm usually okay with the non-standard, or I guess "genre", type of stylistic choices. I know imagines, experimental format, second-person fic and so on isn't "normal fic", but the thing is, AO3 isn't only for fic! It's an archive of transformative work. If you want to archive the rough "what if!!!" outlines you wrote for your friends to squee over, because you love them and don't want them to disappear the next time a corporate-run site goes under, it 100% belongs on AO3.

All that said, people should probably get better at tagging these so they can be filtered out. ("That's why we HAVE a wizard filters!")

That, and I'd personally prefer if they put shorter things into one chaptered "work". I know it has its downsides (tag walls, unrelated content in fandom & ship tags), but it's easier to read and less spammy, IMO. (lol, shoutout to that one time a writer I've been tracking dumped their entire collection of Tumblr prompt request ficlets onto AO3, one per work, and totally swamped my inbox. I mean you do you, writer, but holy crap, that was sure something. XD)

It is very awkward to discuss! And yeah, I totally feel not necessarily having control over who joins and who doesn't. There's plenty of actors/characters that I would not mind joining -- but there's just no...spark? Reason? That said, I've had characters/actors that are "semi-retired" -- for example some MCU characters I used to devour fic for a few years ago, now? Eh. I can't say I can control that -- I'm just not feeling you right now?

Anyway, maybe read some fic of the character or watch movies with actor to get them going/start making a place for them in your subconscious? I don't really know how it works (for example, I don't need a sex dream, but others might -- like you described!) But I know at some point in the past few years I could not find a care to give about Pedro Pascal. Then suddenly, an attraction for him hit me like a freight train! Attraction is a curious thing. Please feel free to discuss what you'd like, OP!

It's so weird to me that people have sex dreams about real people, celebrities or not. But I'm almost 40 and can count mine on one hand with fingers to spare, and they weren't arousing at all.

Pretty sure I saw some of her videos right around the time the live action Mulan came out and they were interesting commentary on the make-up, etc. But I couldn't really get into her because she seems really smug. Gave her book a chance because it sounded pretty amazing (Giant robot battles? Smashing the patriarchy? Bring it on.) but... eh. I didn't hate it but I'd probably liked it more if my expectations hadn't been raised by the buzz and the whole "this is not like other YA novels because it's woker than woke" vibe.
