This was a great series, OP! James Herbert was always so underrated as a writer.

The only James Herbert book I've ever read was Ash, which was Extremely Bad (as in, solidly cemented as the worst book I've ever read) and completely put me off him as a writer. Should I try him again with this or another book?

Try The Rats. Honestly, it is scary and also horrifying (different things), but it was his very first published work and it is a lot less overdone than his later ones and a lot more raw.
