Pretty sure I saw some of her videos right around the time the live action Mulan came out and they were interesting commentary on the make-up, etc. But I couldn't really get into her because she seems really smug. Gave her book a chance because it sounded pretty amazing (Giant robot battles? Smashing the patriarchy? Bring it on.) but... eh. I didn't hate it but I'd probably liked it more if my expectations hadn't been raised by the buzz and the whole "this is not like other YA novels because it's woker than woke" vibe.

Narrator voice: "This is like all the other YA novels, except the throuple is canon and the battles are surprisingly underwhelming."

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I was okay with the threesome but rolled my eyes a little bit when it became clear early on that's where the plot was going. But the lack of really awesome mecha battles was very disappointing. You promise giant robot battles, I'd like more of that and less dumb angst about romance.

Don't have an opinion on this (I'm not Asian, not really my lane), just want to point out that Xiran Jay Zhao's pronouns are they/them :)

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all surprised lol

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but wtf is this response?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The truth. Not surprised because it goes with the whole "woker than thou" vibe.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
cranky because you're transphobic, aren't you?

Came to say this, thanks for beating me!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What does 'scary dragon lady' mean in this context?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, 'sexy'*. xD

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, thank you. I'm going to assume there are like, other promo shots of the other that fit this trope? Because reading that, those three pics definitely scream 'Chinese' (which I am assuming the author is), but not dragon lady trope, imo.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
and by 'the other' I meant 'the author' because apparently my typing has gone right out the window and down 30 floors today. xD

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, they go all out with outfits for all of their videos, so the promos for Iron Widow didn't stand out that much to me, except maybe the black dress, but that was very in line with the main character, so....it fits?

I really enjoyed this book, but I can't speak to anything about the photos. Not Asian. I just really enjoyed the story and the characters. I do love stories featuring badass women.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-23 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with feeling that way nonny.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the promos for their book because I mainly follow them for their movie reviews. They dress-up sometimes for their reviews and I've always liked their outfits, but I think you're perfectly justified in feeling the way you do.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing against her but I've never been able to sit through a video of hers. She just talks too fast? There's lots of YT channels that are like that for me. Even if what they're talking about is interesting the way they talk just makes my brain feel a bit overwhelmed for some reason.

As far as her book I've mostly heard neutral to negative things about it and it seems to be another case of a new-ish writer who feels very confident about their work because they have an audience from their YT channel but the work being ultimately underwhelming for any number of reasons. TBH if that were me I'd publish under a pseudonym and then wait to see the audience reaction to the book as a stand alone before attaching it to my other stuff. Especially when that other stuff is often media criticism LMAO.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
The speed up and slow down functions on YouTube have been a lifesaver for me, honestly. It goes both ways, because some people talk way too fast, but others are way too slow.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Probably they're so used to record TikTok videos that they have to speak THAT fast.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't like it when any Asian country is used as a marketing trick. "This thing written in English in an English-speaking country is so special because the author is SO ASIAN, LOOK, SO ASIAN, SO EXOTIC!"

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don’t agree that that’s what they’re doing, and that this is a needlessly cynical reading. I think they’re proud of their heritage and culture, and want to include it in their work.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-24 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Of these examples, only the middle photo might be Dragon Lady-ish and I don't think there's even anything wrong in a one-off cosplay. I'm Asian too btw, though I feel rather odd having to clarify that.
