123. Fundamentally, when you strip away everything else - all the romance, all the dialogue and fight scenes and whatnot - Dollhouse is a show about human trafficking

And we're supposed to identify with the the traffickers.

It's a fucked up premise - which, if you like it, that's fine. Looking down your nose at those of us who don't only serves to make you look like a jerk.

And we're supposed to identify with the the traffickers.

Why do you say that? From what I've seen so far (and from what Joss has done in the past) it seems more like we're supposed to sympathize with the dolls in their growing self-awareness and struggle to get free of the traffickers.

Full disclosure: Buffy and Angel did nothing for me, I thought Firefly was okay and Serenity was kindof a trainwreck. So my faith in Joss is at somewhere between a 2 and 3 on a scale of 1-10.

I stopped watching Dollhouse early on and have no intention of continuing with it because it's just not my cup of tea - the flickers of self awareness in no way redeem the premise for me.

Just for example: The handler-rapes-his-Active arc: It's presented in such a way where his crime isn't one of rape, but of theft. Are we expected to believe that if a client wanted a pliant, childlike personality to have sex with that the dollhouse wouldn't provide it?

Also the presentation of Mr. Wipes Their Brains (whose name I cannot be bothered to remember) as supposedly sympathetic? I get the impression that we're supposed to like him, but he is just one giant squick to me.

It's fine if you like the show - I'm a little envious of people who do, because I wanted to and couldn't because it puts me off in a very lizard brain kind of way, which I fully admit can lead to a superficial reading on my part. I still think my reading, though partial and superficial, has some level validity.

In terms of Joss, I wasn't necessarily referring to the quality of his work (although I do really enjoy most of what he's done) so much as where he places himself philosophically. Despite any stumbles he's made in executing it, he does call himself a feminist, so I think it's reasonable to assume that we're supposed to side more with the Dolls instead of those who traffic them.

Also the presentation of Mr. Wipes Their Brains (whose name I cannot be bothered to remember) as supposedly sympathetic? I get the impression that we're supposed to like him, but he is just one giant squick to me.

This may be more of a quality issue than anything. I think the Dollhouse is supposed to represent a certain kind of moral ambiguity for the viewer, but the execution of the same has been a bit sloppy so far (as has more or less everything in the show).

And it is, underneath it all, rather creepy.

I don't see how it's supposed to be morally ambiguous - slavery and rape, both of which the Dollhouse deals in - are extremely black-and-white issues.

[identity profile] cobryn-moy.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Way I see it, moral ambiguity in art can be profound when it's working counter to a cultural trope it seeks to re-examine, or looks at something in a new way. But presenting the issues Dollhouse deals with in an ambiguous life just furthers harmful ideas about "grey rape".

"Can rapists and trafickers have redeeming qualities?" is not a conversation we need to be having.

Uhm, I have to argue that Dollhouse seems a bit at odds with Joss' portrayal of himself as a feminist. At this point anyways.

All the women in the show are either reduced to objects (the Dolls), in inferior/serving positions to men (Ivy, Topher's female assistant), or subject to the whims of higher men (Adelle).

I thought that, but they've given Echo such an unpleasant original personality.

but they've given Echo such an unpleasant original personality.

To be fair, that's a largely subjective judgment, although I do think it could have been more interesting.

In general, I agree. With the client in question, though, there's the heavy implication that we should sympathize with what amounts to a serial rapist because he has a sad backstory.
