the idea that writing f/f is morally superior to m/m is already rotten but the entitlement is something else. also the idea that you can just swap characters in a fic and have the exact same story strikes me as utter fanfic brain poisoning

(Anonymous) 2022-04-25 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who would love more f/f in fandom, I agree about the brain poisoning. I would HOPE each relationship brings an entirely new dynamic and story to the table, goddamn.

I like f/f sometimes, but the idea that it's somehow morally superior needs to die in a fire.

You can do that with the characters if you're the kind of "fan" who sees characters as empty shells that only exist to project fantasies onto, as opposed to having actual characterization that matters in context of the story

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Most fans think this these days as far as I can tell.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
That’s kind of sad to me. Why bother even having a favorite character if you don’t care about their actual characterization, and just use them as empty and replaceable vessels for fantasies?

It reminds me of a fanfic writer I used to like, but have grown bored with. They wrote some really cute, funny, and hot fics in one of my fandoms, but have moved on to a different fandom and only write for that now. That in itself is completely fine, if a bit sad considering I don’t care about their new fandom at all, but that’s not the problem. The problem I have is that all the new fics for their new fandom are reused fics for the old one just with character names and ships changed. And all of them were already AUs, so they didn’t even really need to change settings or canon details to begin with. That’s completely their right to do this, especially if they like these scenarios they’ve come up with, and think they’re compatible with different ships. But I just don’t like how it feels like they seem to consider the characters and ships they tend to glom onto as hollow vessels for these plots and situations they’ve already written before. I can’t help but feel that it’s a bit lazy, and makes me wonder if they actually liked the characters that much for who they are in canon. Or if they just liked the look of them in whatever ship dynamics and scenarios they gravitate towards. Again, nothing wrong with that on paper, and they’re just having fun. But I’m not having fun reading their fic for that reason, along with my disinterest with their new fandom. So I just don’t read their stuff anymore, and that’s that.

I don't know what is with the entitlement of some folks in the audience (and this doesn't happen only with fic). Nevermind what they suggested or what you wrote. Unless you personally stated you were accepting requests AND would fulfill any requests you would receive, why the hell would you write anything a reviewer suggested, based on the fact they made a suggestion?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-25 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I just delete comments like that

(Anonymous) 2022-04-25 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That person is an ass and I’m sorry you had to deal with that, OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't you know that it's entirely your responsibility to provide needed representation in fanfiction, which is genuinely the most important kind of representation that exists in society?

[personal profile] lumy12 2022-04-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! Yesssss!

I'm not the OP but this attitude irritates me so much. Like... you know, maybe if I got PAID to write pairings for representational purposes, I'd consider it. But this is just a fun hobby for me and I'm gonna write what I feel INSPIRED to write.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
And f/f fans still have the gall to do mocking impressions of m/m fans portraying us as the ones who think our shipping is representation. (A typical f/f fan: "lmao yaoi fangirls be like "omg squee make my gay babies kiss! This is so important for gay rights! What about an f/f kiss, you say? But that isn't sexy! Omg gay rights!!!!!")

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
And this helps, how?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
probably it's different people doing those two things, not the same people

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
What even is this comment.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've found there's some people in this comm with some BIG chips on their shoulders about f/f fans. Apparently.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. They're kinda aggressive about the strawmanning.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
That is so obnoxious and I'm sorry you had to deal with it, OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
As a fan of f/f, m/m, m/f, and all the other combinations: The comment you got was such entitled bullshit!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oof.

As a gay guy who writes fanfiction as well as original fiction *for myself*, like... I'm the wrong person to ask for smutty f/f rep, but that has not historically stopped people from demanding it, so I do feel you.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch, that sucks. (I have managed to miss this kind of intrusive comment. So far.)

(Anonymous) 2022-04-26 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Fan entitlement isn't new, but by god I wish it were through.
