I don't know for sure, but I think the Giver, the Phantom Tollbooth, Bridge to Terabithia, Number the Stars, the Secret Garden, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Anne Frank are all books that would be read by that point.

I'm just here to say I hated bridge to Terebithia and child me wasn't mad when they did away with the girl.

I didn't know it was a book! I watched the movie when it came out without any knowledge and was so fucking mad at the bait and switch and the random death.

I loved that book as a kid. But I was a kid with a huge imagination growing up in a fundamentalist environment where fantasy was seen as evil. So it was nice to see other kids making up stories like I did. It made me feel a little better about myself.

I remember reading all these when I was in sixth grade, but none of them were required reading except Anne Frank's diary and I'm pretty sure we read a play instead of the actual diary.

Okay. I honestly don't know as I didn't go to school in America. We read parts of all of those, but we very rarely read a whole book. I read on my own the full book for most of the things we only read excerpts of in school.

Phantom Tollbooth was a book I loved as a kid.

I did too. I recently bought a copy and reread it, and it is still fun.
