Did they? I mean in Mystic Nine? I know that later on in the series they dub this character, but in MN he sounds like... well, a white guy trying to speak Mandarin and not doing the greatest job of it.

"To be fair, there's an in-character reason for Hendry's Mandarin to sound bad, in that he *is* a foreigner."

Yeah, but I don't expect that level of logic in a cdrama since they'll have characters who are supposedly Japanese speaking flawless Mandarin even when they're speaking to other Japanese characters. (Because the actors are Chinese.)

I mean, that was the impression I got? Maybe the actor just has a *really* different 'normal' voice to when he's acting. But that's def. an Australian/Kiwi accent he's got in the interview and he's quiet. And if I remember correctly Hendry Cox speaks English in the drama with that same rough Chinese-English awkwardness. (Though it's been long enough since I saw M9 that I might be confusing that with one of the other dramas.)

Bear in mind that Hendry Cox is a guy who chews the scenery in every scene in which he manages to insert himself...

And yet better than you and everyone else on this group could I have no doubt. There's an Asian family who live next to me who speak English heavily accented. Should I be making digs at them too?

Honestly, people can be such dicks about things like this.

Friend. The number of times I have heard completely scathing criticism of an English-speaking actor because they can't quite get an accent down?

Calm down, and let some people who love a series gently poke fun at one of its weaker areas.

If we start mocking everyday folk in their everyday lives, instead of people paid good money for their vocal expertise? Then I would accept your ire.

Yeah, but the point you're missing is that the people doing that criticising were dicks too.

I believe the people who were doing that criticising believed they were Righteous Crusaders Against Cultural Appropriation, actually.

Also. Until you've heard an example of what we're talking about - your opinions aren't worth much. Sorry. That's just the way it is.

As an aside - since we're talking about language use in a particular series - I find the fluidity with which most of the characters (esp. Wang Pangzi) slide between everyday vernacular, references to classical and modern Chinese poetry, references to vintage Chinese pulp novels, Japanese anime, Western pop culture, deliberate misquotes of Neil Armstrong (and a dragging of G R R Martin's inability to finish a story) to be a really engaging part of the storytelling that is done with great skill and enhances my viewing experience.

The actor was dubbed "Stokes Andrew Charles as Cox Hendry / Qiu Dekao (voiced by Shang Hong), a mysterious man that has a lot of knowledge about the Mystic Nine." (according to wiki.d-addicts which is usually pretty accurate for casting and voicing)

Oh, that's good to know. Thank you for clearing that up.
