I'm USian and was a serious bookworm when I was in elementary school and I haven't heard of some of these either. And those I have heard of were definitely not required reading, they were just books that were really popular. I don't remember any REQUIRED reading until middle school, and even then I only recall Shakespeare and some short story anthologies, and that was ONLY for those of us who were in the "Academically Talented" classes. I think regular English students didn't have those extra programs, because none of my friends was carrying those books back and forth when I was.

Also I might not have heard of some of these because when I was the target audience it was the early 80s...

We're about the same age, and I've read most of those books but there are a few I haven't heard of. I think Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry might have been the first book I ever read with a Black protagonist and that was very influential. My Side of the Mountain definitely had me convinced I'd be able to survive alone in the woods for months (LOL).

I don't think any of them were required reading but they were in the school library, and I remember getting a couple from the Scholastic book fair (which was the highlight of my year)
