Can't edit but need to add: Sometimes 11 year olds might be in middle school or elementary school, depending on the district. In middle school you'll have more flexibility because you could be put into an "honors" or otherwise accelerated class while elementary classes are typically kept together but might be pulled out for a special class or program.

A middle school might have a summer reading list, it's a little unusual but if you want your character to have to read a bunch before starting class that would be reasonable.
