hell yes

hermione's appearance in the books was always described as plain, but when you cast kids for movies you can never tell what's going to happen by the time they've basically doubled in age over a ten year franchise

so there was a lot of wailing that emma watson "grew up too hot" for the plain hermione, bonnie wright "didn't grow up hot enough" for the fiery ginny and matthew lewis... was generally accepted as neville

That last bit has me dying, lmao

In the fourth book, Hermione's described as beautiful (everyone, even Drago, is dumbfounded when she appears in the Yule ball, because she's very pretty). In her earlier years at Hogwarts, she had too long teeth (rabbit teeth?) and messy hair. Once her teeth were shortened and she learned to take care of her hair, then she wasn't neither ugly nor plain. Lot's of hot people start as not that hot kids. I may be wrong however, it's been a while since I've read the books.

rabbit teeth = beaver teeth

I always took it that Hermione was such a no-nonsense, prim child that she put little effort into her appearance. I remember how she dismissed Pavarti and Lavender for their 'girly' interests in a few parts of the book (or atleast was very disproving of them). The only time we are shown her being like her female peers -- was her crush on Lockhart.

When she finally made the effort, for a formal affair like the Yule Ball, she showed that she cleaned up nicely.

i figured that, for the first few books at least, she was "plain" because she was supposed to be a blank slate that any suitably aged girl could project themselves onto

as for the yule ball and onwards... erk. it's always awkward when you're writing an ongoing book series with an ongoing film adaptation series because - subconsciously or not - the writer will almost certainly stop writing books and start writing screenplays and incorporating more actor characteristics into the book characters and so on (hence my - likely controversial and probably wrong - opinion that rickman may have been miscast as snape, one casting jk has fully admitted began to inform the writing)

tldr; so i don't know if she cleaned up nicely because she put in the effort or because she became emma watson and the books decided to use that

Nayrt

This is a really good point, and I think you’re right.

My only problem with that is Goblet of Fire came out in 2000. A full year before the first movie.

So yes; knowing who adult is going to be in the films could influence the adult characters. Not kid unless you want to say JKR was somehow a seer and just knew how 10 year old Emma would turn out at 15.

But some of the films came out before the books were finished, and I’m pretty sure that’s what AYRT was talking about? Not implying JKR was a seer?

DA
That anon mentioned the Yule Ball (the first time Hermione is described as being actually quite pretty), which happened during Goblet of Fire and was therefore written well before the first movie came out.

Oh. Never mind, sorry.

Yep, and lots of tweens/teens go through an awkward stage before they learn to take care of themselves. I definitely was weird-looking as an awkward middle-schooler, and then figured things out a bit more in high school.
