She does have a tendency to come off a little "Not Like The Other Girls" about it to modern readers, but I think that was a natural reaction at the time to the levels to which then-modern standards of acceptable femininity fell outside anything she had the desire or inclination to perform to. These days, I suppose she would be amazed by some things and horrified by others. Then again, aren't we all?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, this was a prescient secret, lol

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
How so?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
In light of the recent "LMA was a trans man" discourse

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god really. What a bunch of bullshit. So now anybody striving for adventure and excitement outside of what social confines will allow has to be a transman? Fuck that noise.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
not everyone "striving for adventure and excitement outside of what social confines will allow" has to be a trans man, but equally, some people from the past probably were trans men. it makes you a shitty person if you think that someone from history might have been trans. tbh I think it's kind of shitty to act like no one in the past ever was trans. and in this particular instance, it was at least drawn from a close and exhaustive reading of Alcott's writing and correspondence.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
It really, really wasn't though. It was invented by someone who really wanted it to be true and chose to creatively misinterpret cherry-picked and in some cases incomplete quotes with zero context and zero grasp of how Victorian-era people actually understood gender and sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
If you think the specific post is wrong, say that you disagree with the specific post is wrong. If you think the specific post is wrong for reasons specific to the specific person being discussed, don't make a general statement about how "anybody striving for adventure and excitement outside of what social confines will allow has to be a transman".

THIS

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's fair to say someone who wouldn't be trans by Victorian standards would or could be considered trans by today's. We regularly use modern language and values to talk about other things in the past that wouldn't have been talked about in the same way at the time. But as always, it's different for trans people, because that's where you choose to draw the line about respecting historical differences, despite there being zero Victorians around to be hear and be offended by being talked about with standards that don't match theirs.

It makes you a shitty person to assume all women who aren't cookie cutter stereotypes must be experiencing gender dysphoria. Fucks sake.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Who assumed that? Which post assumed that? What statement that anyone made suggested that all women who aren't cookie cutter stereotypes must be experience gender dysphoria? Where did someone make that statement? What are you talking about?

lol no, piss off with your religious dogma

(Anonymous) 2022-05-01 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
How is what they’re saying religious dogma? It’s fine if you disagree with them, because I don’t think I really agree with them either. But what’s religious about it?

You should read Lou's letters then.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
oh geez please do not tell me that people are actually taking seriously the highly cherry-picked and wildly uninformed ramblings of the dude who is known to be regularly making shit up out of his own head for funsies

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2022-04-30 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
what do you think is cherry picked about them?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
imma post someone else's post about it below because I am too tired to go over all of this right now

Ah, well, lucky for us all I wasn't actually referring to Alcott being trans (I...don't particularly like that post lmao), I was referring to what the secret liked, which is that she transversive cultural norms in her letters. But I see how you got there from "Lou" considering.

I see people are for some reason taking A Certain Person seriously so I am just gonna drop this here

please read this and try to think critically (“https://marzipanandminutiae.tumblr.com/post/682096485771378688/girl-help-someone-is-taking-things-out-of-context")

Excellent summary. Thanks for sharing.

I dunno, I remember being hugely disappointed that Jo married that old Bhaer dude instead of not marrying at all (or heck, marrying Laurie). How was that subversive?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC her publisher pushed her to write that. I think Jo was originally supposed stay unmarried, just like herself.
