Yes, so much this. There are probably objectively worse characters out there, but her shitty personality combined with the fact that the writers (and RTD in particular) clearly expect the viewers to adore her and root for her while she's being a whiny, obnoxious and entitled idiot is just... no, fuck off, preferably for good.

Steve Rogers, Loki, Hawkeye, Hank Pym, and Doctor Strange, but only the MCU version in the case of Strange. I’m fine with Steve and Loki in the comics most of the time, but they get on my nerves in sometimes there too depending on the run. And I actually used to like MCU Steve at first. I understand people who like him, or came away from Civil War hating Tony instead, but I don’t personally agree(although both Steve and Tony were awful in the original Civil War comics in my opinion). I also understand people who dislike how much Tony takes over every movie he’s in, on top of being in too many movies, which is not a problem Steve shares, but I still dislike Steve more. I’ve hated Hawkeye and Hank Pym from the beginning, and the MCU versions were no different.

I also really don’t like Wolverine, with the minor exception of some of the animated adaptations.

I don’t really like Bakugou from My Hero Academia, same with Mineta. I don’t outright hate Bakugou as much as I used to, but he will always be one of my least favorites.

Agreed, she’s unimaginably awful and annoying!

I'm sick (not the big C tough fortunately) and threw out my back which the coughing only makes worse so I'm in a lot of pain and discomfort. Got an email on Friday that I have an interview for a job I really want so I'm both anxious and happy about it. Cant really process it due to the fever though. Fortunately the interview is the Wednesday after the next so I'll hopefully be healthy until then.

the vampire diaries? but that was on a much smaller scale.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-01 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
This. While his impaling fallen enemies to frighten the rest of the troops was a genuinely disturbing war tactic that even unsettled his subjects, not to mention critics among the populace and nobles, he was considered a hero for his country. It’s just that being seen as a war hero can involve great violence, and sometimes even barbarism and horrific body counts. Especially in those old warring times. A lot of historians really don’t believe Vlad III was some kind of monster, much less one of history’s worst monsters.

Well there is our horror story hook right there. Vlad Tepes somehow still living in modern Scotland, still not able to break the staking people habit. Starts slaughtering a group of teens, before the last plucky girl breaks the curse and drives him onto a stake with her car and a quippy last line.

He was nutso. You don't start nailing people's hats to their heads, or sticking whole armies on giant stakes, and get to call yourself the very picture of mental health. That is certifiable nutjob material right there.

The roasting of the Abbot of Crossraguel. Any time someone sticks a bishop on a spitroast is probably ripe for the movie treatment.

More like Sunday now, due to how late this post went up. So super-duper late.

The Doctor, from first to dead last in only five years. Thanks a lot Chibbers and Moffatt. Now go die in a fire, both of you. Help fight climate change, and make it the same fire.

Yeah, one of the people I know, she and her boyfriend had to duck out of a dance competition because he had "food poisoning" in mid-2020 and I was like "....Hmmm..." and eventually since it didn't let up for several days, she took him to the hospital. I was not surprised at the results. :/

All the more reason I just stayed isolated all this time. I've been phobic of GI illnesses since I was young... turns out it might have been self-preserving instinct since every time I've had one, it's followed by a massive symptom flare that is worse with each incarnation and lasts years. (11 years running with the current one.) I'd really rather wind up on a respirator but that couldn't be guaranteed.

I googled John Harker and I'm interested.

Some people consider Hitler a hero to his country too, if we're talking nutjobs who conducted wholesale grotesque slaughters.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a movie about John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry already, especially in the early 2000s when The Last Samurai came out. Like, Hollywood was all about doing stories about poc staring a white guy. John Brown is RIGHT THERE and he has so much action movie dialog already on the books. But yeah, I'd be 100% down with watching a mid budget R-Rated action movie about militant abolitionists. Fredrick Douglass can be the Big Good (tm). There's a weird flashback to Harriet Tubbman. Slave owners get murdered with spears. It would make 3$ at the box office.

I am all about high violence grind-house movies with a quasi-progressive spin APPARENTLY because my second nomination is Romaine-la-Prophétesse. Romaine was a black revolutionary leader during the first stages of the Haitian Resolution. They took on the female "prophetess" persona to closely align with the Virgin Mary but it's easy to see this figure as trans or otherwise non-cis in some way. They gave fiery speeches with a saber in one hand and an inverted cross on the other about how God was black and commanded they fight for their freedom. Romaine's forces conquered and held two cities for a while before all the French forces were like "Oh shit having two cities in the hands of rebel slave armies is a PROBLEM actually" and stopped fighting each other to retake those cities. Romaine escaped and history loses track of them. This figure is so cool and unusual and I would love to see some attention thrown this way. Honestly there are a ton of things about the Haitian revolution that would make some sick action movies. There's no way they wouldn't be horribly offensive to someone if made by Americans but fuck it this is my fantasy.

And now for one that wouldn't need to press against an NC17 rating: the life and times of Jack Kirby. He's a cool guy and a neat artist and he deserves WAY more credit for super hero stuff.

I debated not answering for- you know- the usual reasons, but sure, why not. It’s Starker.

The ship itself is not that small, but 95% of the fic is daddy kink, feminization, age play/littles play, incest, no-powers AUs, and/or some form of rape/noncon--none of which I am interested in. Kink tomato and all that; it’s just not what I want from the pairing. Hence my medium-sized ship feels like a small ship.

This. Some of the stuff she did I could have maybe forgiven because the whole team had their own flaws/lies/etc. (team hot mess) but when she basically roofied Rhys to make herself feel better that was the last bit of slack I cut her and I just couldn't stand her anymore.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-01 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah! nina dobrev plays two significant characters and there's several instances where one's imitating the other (happens less frequently as the series goes on and one becomes a more established character, but it's still fun to watch and i feel like nina's not given enough credit for how well she portrays each character (elena, katherine, katherine imitating elena, elena imitating kathering, and the other doppelgangers she plays within the series and its spin offs).

I was saying being a war hero isn’t really as glamorous and honorable as some people think, because it’s often times about violence more than helping people. Sometimes helping people isn’t even part of the equation. Just saying someone wasn’t a literal horror movie monster who did all of this strictly for fun isn’t glorifying it? That’s why I used all that negative language to describe the bloodshed he committed, and said it even unsettled his subjects(which led to many problems he should have seen coming if he wasn’t crazy, which I never disputed just by saying he wasn’t a movie villain). And then you equate anything I said to Hitler, that’s so ridiculously bad faith it’s scary. You do know invoking Hitler to try to win arguments is a transparent technique everyone knows about, right?

Maybe it's sad that the first character I thought of was in an anime that aired almost 15 years ago, but: Sheryl Nome.

The way she is supposed to be the Embodiment Of Womanhood even though she is clearly just an annoying teenager just freaks me out. Yeah, she is cute, stylish and sings well, fine, whatever. But talk about an annoying teenage Sue that ruined the anime for me, ugh.
