I feel the same way about "Early Access" games, even though my partner has played a few. Like... why not wait until release? when it's done?

hell, there are some games I won't even play until two or three patches after release, just because the genre I like most is kind of infamous for being rushed and full of bugs and needing day 0 patches anyway.

Yeah, I remember people posting about how glitchy and unfun the Baldur’s Gate 3 beta was. It’s a beta!

Edit: the devs called it “Early Access,” just to get my terminology right.

lol, BG3 was exactly the one I was thinking about. it's been in EA for at least 18 months and still doesn't have a projected release date afaik

lol this is happening right now with Vicky 3 except it's not even a public beta. Somebody literally leaked a private beta. For a Paradox game, which, their games usually don't even work properly until a good 3-6 months after the public release if you're lucky. And then a bunch of people went to play it and complained about stuff being broken. Like... what did you guys expect to happen here.

I keep opting in to World of Warcraft's expansion betas and have gotten in the last three or four times, but every time I just mess around in character creation (if there's something new there), play maybe an hour's worth of the introductory bits and give feedback on that, and then log off the beta and wait for release. I don’t want to get tired of the leveling content before I get to do do for real, and I don’t know why they keep letting me in the betas, lol.

Not really? New shit is going to be added/changed over time. And if it never gets added/changed, then that's that. You move on to another game if you get bored, or if you're waiting in between updates. No big deal.

for me it depends on the game, stuff like baldurs gate yea you're just paying to play a worse version earlier, but online shooters like overwatch for example are not going to burn you out on the actual release.

that said i am actually playing bg3 a lot because it's just so good, even though i think early access is the devil...

Definitely depends on the game - just look at Vampire Survivors. Has been in Early Access for months and is still a fantastic game. Very simple concept but addictive gameplay. Updated so regularly that there's always something new and fun to discover - very much like free DLC to the base game. It just gets better and better each time you play it. Also only $3.00 on Steam

Cause I'm a cheap bastard, and I want to play a game first to see if it's worth my money. If I don't get into a Beta/Alpha for free, I'll usually pirate it to try it out first.
