Any opinions on the Met Gala?

(Anonymous) 2022-05-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it live with my mother — on mute. She loves the whole thing, but I can’t stand the inane chat. I’m just in it for the outfits.

I thought it was actually a little disappointing. A lot of people pretty much ignored the theme, which may have been badly chosen in the first place. Still, there were some impressive pieces, both aesthetically and conceptually.

Blake Lively and Alicia Keys were probably my favourites. Close behind would be Sarah Jessica Parker and Lizzo.

I haven't really checked it out this year. The theme was just a little dull. Some years they've been really good with the theme and it led to some fascinating outfits. This years' theme seems unlikely to elicit such creativity, though.

AYRT - Yeah, the theme felt pretty narrow and not something that a lot of people had a sense of. Even the ones that went “historical US” often aimed for more 1920s-1960s rather than late 1800s or turn of the century.

All I've seen so far is Johnny from NCT was there. Should have been Taeyong =')

Only good for jewel heists

I thought Billie Eilish was most on point.

Blake Lively was good, though, especially with the transformation. And I appreciated Ryan Reynolds' white tie and velvet suit.

I also liked Nicola Coughlan and Danai Gurira, plus Christine Branski's take on white tie.

Stormzy was pretty awesome in all white, with a cape. David Harbor seemed to get all the accessories. And I kind of liked the pleated kilt on Russell Westbrook's white tie look, but I wish the material was different for the jacket.

I do not get Sebastian Stan's outfit at all. I really dislike Chole Bailey's glittery sickly yellow dress that looks like a modern art sculpture I would roll my eyes at and Jordan Roth's goth toddler bounce house thing.

AYRT - Oooh, you’ve definitely called out some good ones, as well as some I think I missed on the live stream. I’ll have to take a look through the images for good ones that I missed.

I think Billie Eilish’s outfit was very good, but I have a personal hang-up about the way she was posing in it. She kept sort of pushing her bosom forward and leaning over? It looked uncomfortable, awkward, and out of place. Really distracted me from the outfit itself.

NAYRT but looking at the outfit, she understood the assignment more than a lot of people; the dress is a bit early (1879? 1880?) for gilded age and looks like it's missing some underpinnings, but the unnatural S-shape of the 1890s really was that weird.

Oh, yeah, I didn't mean the silhouette. The dress looks really good in the still pictures, especially when she's standing up straight. But in the video, you can see that she keeps leaning forward, caressing her torso and pushing her boobs out, like she wants them to pour out over the top. Maybe it's a fashionable modeling pose, like a sort of pin-up thing? I wouldn't know.

People has a pretty extensive set of photos - https://people.com/style/the-met-gala-2022-red-carpet-looks-you-must-see/

Yeah, I don't know what was up with her posing. Her shoes were pretty tall, so maybe with the bustle and the corset, she was trying to keep her balance as best she could? Or maybe it was meant to say something about fashion or what the press expects?
