it's true that it's currently tangled up in snarl and rotten writing, but without its continuity doctor who is nothing

Wow, I completely disagree with both of these opinions. Doctor Who's continuity doesn't matter at all, and they don't need to do a reboot because they can just change anything they want however they want whenever they want.

They just need to tell good Doctor Who stories and make good episodes of television. That's the only thing they need to do.

Doctor Who continuity is famously flexible, except for a handful of things. We're at the point now where a showrunner just decided to piss all over established previously inflexible continuity because he wanted to be different (and rumours are it was basically fanfic he wrote as a kid) and that annoyed people A LOT.

By this point you may as well just reboot the whole thing with new rules.
