Doctor Who continuity is famously flexible, except for a handful of things. We're at the point now where a showrunner just decided to piss all over established previously inflexible continuity because he wanted to be different (and rumours are it was basically fanfic he wrote as a kid) and that annoyed people A LOT.

By this point you may as well just reboot the whole thing with new rules.

he threw the show into the toilet because he was pissy about a 44 year old plot hole, i don't know how much more beholden to continuity you can get
