Earlier reader inserts use to give all kinds of traits to the insert. But it's more "in style" now to keep things as vague as possible except for things directly tied to the premise or which are plot relevant. At least appearance wise. You can't really get around writing a certain personality. I totes get it as a "not my thing" sort of deal but I never understood people's confusion over the insert being a character in the first place.

It's less "this is me!" and more "I'm going to pretend this is 'me' for a little while." And it can be hard to explain the appeal. It's just projection turned up to eleven but everyone generally knows what they're there for.

(Yes, there's a high volume of garbage ones but there's a high volume of garbage anything in fandom because there's no bar for entry. I've come across plenty who have excellent technical writing skills it's just that what they're writing isn't something everyone likes.)

as someone who was unfamiliar with readerfic at the time, i guess that's what i didn't understand about it. it was billed as you x character but the "you" was actually an oc some of the time. prior to that, i was definitely familiar with oc x character fic but it was usually tagged as oc x character. i didn't realize "reader" meant the same as oc for some fic but not for others. plus i was more familiar with tumblr imagine-type stuff which was much more vague but also sometimes tagged as readerfic. i dunno, to me, it just seems like "readerfic" could mean a lot of different things and i never considered the video game avatar aspect before. (i don't play video games though so maybe that's why.)
