Yeah, it's hard to find Star Trek (TM) these days. Everything seems more geared to doing what everyone else is doing (TV) or as a stepping stone (J.J. Douchebag) and not following the ST formula of asking and discussing a particular question about the human experience. Except AOS movie 3. That was the most Star Trek of this new bunch. (I'll give AOS 1 a pass since it was introducing the characters and the universe.)

I think I agree w you about the TV series (although I haven't seen SNW yet) but the movies have always been like this back to Wrath

ARYT

I think the movies have had a few missteps but in general you can see what topic they want to explore. ST IV is about sustainable environmentalism. Star Trek V is about religious extremism. ST Nemesis is about nature vs nurture. Star Trek Beyond is about individualism vs collectivism. Etc etc.

I and IV I'll grant you. Also Insurrection even though it wasn't good. but stuff like First Contact and Nemesis, that's just an action movie with a thin veneer of Star Trek, just as much as for AOS.
