When exactly was this golden age? In my experience, media directed at children with child protagonists has tended towards having obvious villains and useless adults since at least the 80's. If anything, modern children's entertainment is more likely to have non-obvious villains or none at all, like some of Disney's recent output.

I dunno, I feel like having villains who are obviously evil and walking jokes is actually a true reflection of real life villains. Just look at Donald Trump.

TBH I don't think people would really argue with you on this one, unless you specifically said nice things about STID. I mean there are plenty of people who dislike the AOS movies but I would think that most of those people also dislike the new shows.

Yeah I feel this way too - and these movies were the reason I got into the original series in the first place. (I've also watched DS9 and Voyager, but need to give TNG another try - I have mix feelings about Enterprise because I loved it as a kid for some reason even though it seems so different now as an adult - also I still love T'Pol).

I haven't watched any of the new shows yet (tho tbf that's mostly they're on that damn streaming service I can't get here and won't just for them alone, so...) but I've recently rewatched those movies and kind of fell back in love with them.
The writing was dodgy (I mean, we all know that STID was uhm, not good) but I really liked the chemistry of the cast - though I still wish they hadn't done the Spock/Uhura romance. I know many people actually like it but I'm salty that the only major female character had that one as her main "focus" for three movies straight (cause lbr apart from Kirk and Spock no one got any true storyline). Guess the third one at least tried?
Anyways, the movies - especially the first one - are a lot of fun and I do hope that they'll make a fourth one. There were some rumours, right? My brain didn't make those up?

And then I ordered the new-ish novels set in that timeline just to have *more* of them.

The first one was really, really good and the cast was completely amazing.

I liked the 3rd one when I saw it in theaters, but every time I've gone back to rewatch it, I sort of get bored around the 30-45 minute mark.

I'm on episode 22 now, where they're climbing the gigantic bronze tree but had to stop and fight off the murderous masked ape guardians with guns and martial arts, all to the soundtrack of screaming electric guitar. And I love that I can type out that description and people who've watched this will nod sagely while the people who haven't seen Lost Tomb are probably like jfc wtf.
