I love Pilot so much, he is such an interesting character. And I always forget that he is basically a big puppet

You know why Pilot was so great, other than the vocal work, it was because they gave the puppet microexpressions. I caught a talk from one of the creatureshop engineers once, and they talked about how for puppets to be believable they needed to be given small barely noticeable microexpressions to act alongside the human actors. Apparently that is something Henson tried to give even the stiff foam puppets in some way (usually with the way the puppeteers moved it), and the more sophisticated the puppet, the more mini-movements they needed to build in. It was a whole damn art. Too many puppet props just don't bother with anything other than the macromovements.
