JJ's not an assistant, archivist, librarian or butler - she's a special agent in her own right who acts as the media liaison and basically runs the place!

YOU are downplaying assistants' importance in their jobs.
I'm fairly sure the opener knows JJ's importance, as he knows the importance of any of the other characters he chose (weel, except perhaps Kenneth though Jack SAId in first season he could run NBC if he wanted)

Hey did I put the word "only" in front of assistant, butler, etc? Those were the specific job titles the OP mentioned and she's not any of them. I know her job title is longer than would probably fit in the box, but I would argue that she doesn't fit within that grouping anyway. She's not an assistant who works for the team - she is an agent herself. She still runs the place whether she is an assistant or agent, that doesn't change, but it just seems to be overlooked sometimes.
