Notes:

Guys. I can't note the fandom if you don't tell me what it is. "Please note the fandom!" tells me nothing.

OOC charactarizations are present in all fandoms the percentage and range just increase with the amount of fans, it's like a permanent percentage of fanfic in every fandom is way OOC it just is. The fandom/fanfic system still produces good stuff, it's just like everything else, normal distribution of good, bad, and average fics throughout fandom. i.e. GET OVER IT! P.S. I totally read slash of him, and I know in canon it would never ever happen, but when someone is asexual and you want to pair them, you kinda have to make them ooc enough to have a libido...

You just proved you have no idea what asexual means.

Way to go.

okay, I'm an idiot, I get it, but I think I got the point across.

Isn't it a matter of opinion that Rorschach is either asexual or not? I'm pretty fascinated by the debate over his sexuality, since I think there are all sorts of things in the novel to support certain theories.

Writing Rorschach as a slash character=/=reading him as 'an out gay man'. I don't know if that's exactly what you're referring to or if it's more than that, but really, writing slash does not entail reading a canon as having teh gay; it only entails that the writer has slash goggles and there's subtext available to be transformed into an anagram of subtext.

Re: 157

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_kasihime_/ 2009-04-04 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
How is it OOC to make him gay? Unless I missed the part where Rosarch screamed "I AM NOT A HOMOSEXUAL!" from the highest point in the tallest tower, I think everyone's free to let their imaginations go for a jog.

Besides, I think sexual orientation is about as much of a character trait as liking the color blue is a character trait.
Neither really affects the inherent personality of a character.

Re: 157

(Anonymous) 2009-04-04 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, as far as Rorschach is concerned, sex matters a lot to his personality IMHO. I mean, his whole flashback chapter is about his sexual trauma re: his mother. It's a big big factor in making him what he is.

Re: 157

[identity profile] cobryn-moy.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it makes a difference that the OP says "openly gay". While I can see where people are going with readings of Rorschach as having unacknowledged homosexual tendencies, the idea of him as 'out' to himself is mindboggling. He would completely cease to be recognisable as a character, IMO.

Re: 157

(Anonymous) 2009-04-04 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS THIS THIS A THOUSAND TIMES THIS

It's even worse when they write him not only openly gay, but also a rapist.

Re: 157

[identity profile] trillianastra.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm.

Maybe an Alan Moore test? To see if people reading/watching Watchmen have read his other stuff... or maybe that would be too elitist.

(for reference... I've read Watchmen, V for Vendetta and WildCATS. Multiple times. Which will have to do, as my comic-acquiring-resources suck.)

Re: 157

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
But if we applied that test to all his work he'd never have a new reader again. Troubling...

Re: 157

[identity profile] shiplizard.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think Top Ten and Tom Strong are more loving and fun (in his slightly creepy way, with Tom Strong) then Watchmen or V.

Re: 157

[identity profile] jaclynhyde.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone see him as an out gay man (except for deliberately crack fanart)? Most of the slash fic I've seen of him portrays him as deeply repressed and self-loathing over his homosexual urges. And really, portraying Rorschach as openly heterosexual would be just as OOC as openly gay/bi--I'd call Rorschach one of the easier characters to write gay/bi and be IC, as he represses his sexuality (whatever it may be) so much that we don't have canon romantic feelings to deal with.

Re: 157

[identity profile] avidlydelicious.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, you said it much better than I could have! Thanks!
Addition: Outside of the obvious Sue het fic, I've yet to see an "OutSchach" fic that wasn't crack and meant to be perfectly serious and IC. Most slash has him as violently repressed... probably because it's more interesting that way. :-P

I don't think that would really work that well.

Q. Does this guy look gay to you?
A. I have no freakin' clue, I haven't read the thing yet!

This made me laugh. Course if you showed a pic of movie!Ozymandias the answer would be yes.

I haven't skimmed down yet, but I'm sure there are lots of bitchy "OMG, get over yourself!" comments...but I kinda agree. There are many fandoms about which I could say this, actually, because it's really, really painful when people don't 'get it' and write horrifying fanfic as a result. (I had this experience when Sweeney Todd came out.) Rorschach DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ROMANCE/SEX. At all. Ever. Sorry.

Re: 157

[identity profile] jikeidannin.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
HEY, don't dump the OOC Watchmen fans back into the Batman fandom! We don't want them, either! Make them go watch Twilight or something. D:
(God the thought of Rorschach being an openly gay man just...killed something inside me.)

Re: 157

(Anonymous) 2009-04-05 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
You want a test people before they can enjoy a movie or read a graphic novel? That is unbelievably idiotic. People have different interpretations of works all the time. Sure, some are more supported than others, but to subject anyone to some sort of test before they have the opportunity to appreciate a work wouldn't do anything but limit the amount of good discussion and contributions being made about it.

I watched the film with some people that never read the graphic novel. They thought there should have been more fight scenes and that the movie should have been about the Comedian instead, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of it. Maybe they'll go on to read the graphic novel, get more interested, and contribute meaningfully to fandom. If they were shunned outright, they wouldn't even have the chance to.

Re: 157

(Anonymous) 2009-04-05 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Rorschach isn't asexual.

No offence to anyone, but asexuality is where a person has NO sexual urges whatsoever. Rorschach freakin' admits he has them (Not sure of the exact place in the GN, but he says something along the lines of 'With mask on, I am free from depravity. Free from Fear. Free from Lust), he may be afraid of such urges- his horror at his dream at the Charleston home for example- but he evidently has them nonetheless. The whole point of Rorschach is even though he tries to see the world in black and white, it isn't that way, and he is not 'pure' in any sense- he breaks the law often and whatnot.

And let's be honest, the only person Rorschach appreciates the opinion of- not counting his father or President Truman- would be Daniel. So any sort of pairing would be with him, logically, though I doubt it would happen; Rorschach's too messed up to accept any feelings he might have, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have them.

Then again, the OP said 'openly gay'... Does anyone write him like that? Repressed sure, but open about it? So maybe this whole post of mine was pointless...

(Wanky post is full of wank, I suppose....)
