Thanks - there was a bit of a... well... I don't even really know what to call it last night. After hundreds, if not thousands of people expressed their rage and were debating cancelling and losing our hotel deposits and so on for the entirety of Monday and Tuesday, last night the official accounts posted an "update" with "clarification" on which areas at the cons would require masks.

Aaaaaand basically it was all panels, events, the dealer's hall/artist's alley, the game/entertainment room, guest and industry events... So uh. Basically everywhere except the public lobbies that the con can't set mandates over.

So they were trying to backpedal without looking like they were backpedaling, but we all know they were backpedaling. But at least they did backpedal.

I really would have appreciated the vaccination/negative test to still be required, but personally I had already planned on precautions above and beyond (I've been bringing my own disinfectants and so on to conventions for years) and at this point I'm thinking of it like a trip to the grocery store. Don't spend much time there, and in the areas where masks aren't required, try to keep my distance from the unmasked. And I am freshly vaccinated, two weeks from the last shot was under a week ago, so my antibodies are as high as they're gonna get. Plus I can always go outside (weather is supposed to be hot, then just warm) or retreat to my room (which I will try to get on a low floor so I don't have to be in elevators) if there are too many idiots.

LMFAO WOW. yeah that's sure some backpedaling. I know there's some wiggle room with some con spaces re: public space vs con space but that's kind of funny.

You'll be ok if you keep your mask on, try to keep distance, and take breaks in your room or outside. I recently did a con in the Dells that couldn't regulate public space so there were a lot of unmasked civilians in the restaurants and lobby but everyone in conspace was masked so it turned out okay. Your precautions are smart, so good luck otherwise!

Thank you! And yeah, I'm going to not be spending much time indoors unless it's my own room or one of the HUGE halls with high ceilings like the dealer's room (the aisles may be crowded, but there's always some space to back off around the edges) or the entertainment hall (there's one big room that's partitioned for photoshoot locations, so people will cluster around those places but you can sit off to the side if you're not in a particular shot). And I have friends who feel similarly to me about the whole thing, so we were already planning to meet up and hang out outside. Anything more, I'll have to decide when I get there and see what the situation is. :P

It also helps that I've seen the data on the effectiveness of KN95s. More effective if everyone's wearing them of course, but pretty darned effective for awhile even if other people aren't masked. And I've got 7 left in my package, plus decorative fabric covers to go over them that go with all of my costumes. ;)
