LOL. Sorry, OP. I actually love the fictional Warrens, but I think of them as just that.

Not OP

Yeah, I've enjoyed the movies I've seen. But I just like paranormal shit in general.

I hear you. The fictional Warrens are a sweet couple. The IRL Warrens are charlatans.

I enjoyed the movies, but personally I always found it odd they tried to force it into the "based on real events" genre.

Me too, I wish they'd leaned more towards an "inspired by real events" framing, so I wouldn't feel bad about liking the movie version of them.

When it comes to ghost stories, I suspect that the majority of the audience is drawn in by the "based on a true story" rather than admitting it's made up.

I think it adds a little frisson but I cannot believe that it matters all that much.

Huh.
I remember reading Amityville as a young teen (and it freaking me out a bit), but I can't say these people ping anything in my brain. Thanks for the link!

AYRT
You're welcome! :)

TIL that the Annabelle doll was a Raggedy Ann instead of a porcelain one like in the movies.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-20 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Much scarier, imo. We're primed to think of porcelain dolls, especially more realistic-looking ones, as scary because of the uncanny valley and previous use. Raggedy Ann, though, we don't have that association with, and I find the "innocent" evil to be worse than the obvious.

Plus if you punt a porcelain doll down the stairs, it'll break. Raggedy Ann would be able to get back on her feet and keep coming after you. I know which one I'd rather face off with.
