When asked, I always say that I'd like to see more non-western fantasy settings, Asia in particular. And I would! In theory...

But in practice I tend to gravitate towards the same western European fantasy settings. They're familiar and comforting, like a cozy blanket.

It doesn't help that I'm never quite happy with the execution of non-western fantasies I've read. They either sound exactly like western fantasy with different landscapes, or they read like they exist to reflect current (and almost always U.S.-centric) social and racial issues, even if they're not set in the U.S. or its fantasy equivalent.

I know I need to be patient. This subgenre is still growing and the selection is still relatively limited. Of course there are going to be clumsy examples. Genre classics will happen. Old-school fantasy from the 60s and 70s was a mixed bag, too. But it's so hard to wait.

Games thread!

I think it just seems to most people like there's a lot more bad, or at least boring and banal, CGI compared to how much boring or bad practical effects there were.

People can go into arguments about why that is until the cows come home (and I'm sure that at least some of it is survivorship bias) but at the end of the day, that's pretty much the reason that the perception exists: because there's a lot of movies and TV shows where people don't find the CGI work satisfying.

LOL. Sorry, OP. I actually love the fictional Warrens, but I think of them as just that.

How was your day, FS?

I haven’t checked in in a long while, but I’m glad y’all are still going strong.

What was the best part of your day?

What was the worst?

What are your plans for tomorrow?

Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2022-05-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and I'll try my best to use an appropriate image choice. Just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made.

I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

Yours truly,

a secret maker

I feel like the push towards “African” fantasy flattens things a bit. It’s not like there’s a singular culture or mythology that covers all “Africans.” Some of these books and games seem very different from each other in terms of the source material they’re drawing from.

(Aside from anime and the occasional Southeast Asian horror game, my main exposure to Asian fantasy has been China’s “cultivator” genre, which I do not like at all.)

I much prefer You Rang M'Lord to Downton Abbey, it might be a sitcom but it is way more honest about the vicissitudes of the British class system. Plus Downton is written by an actual Tory peer of the realm as unabashed propaganda for the class system and Empire.

Grand Admiral Thrawn is my favourite fictional baddie for one reason, and one reason only, he went to art school. The man almost defeats the Rebels/New Republic through the power of having an art degree.

Big shout out to all the new Ghost in the Shell fans who came into fandom because of the new Netflix cartoon, or the ScarJo movie! I hate what they did in those, but I am so stoked for you new guys who get to experience the same thrill of coming into something new that you love that I did when I first encountered the original manga and anime. That flash of something new and exciting, even if a few wets like me moan, is something that never leaves you. Mad ups to you all.

I hear you. The fictional Warrens are a sweet couple. The IRL Warrens are charlatans.

I hated the old Thunderbirds tv show from the sixties, all those puppets looked so hokey and creepy. And the background music was just horrible. I love the reboot cartoon of it though, Thunderbirds Are Go, even though the animation is supposed to be based on the puppets; it just looks great. The redesign ships are so much nicer too (except Thunderbird 2, that one I loved the sixties design on).

That's not from a video game.
