Petty reasons that got in your way to getting into a fandom

Reading a Sentinel trope fic I just realised that Blair's hair is why I didn't watch the series past episode 1.

I may be dating myself here but Blair's hair is WHY I watched Sentinal in the first place! The 90s, man. Him and Adian Paul on Highlander. That's how hot guy hair just was.

anyway my only petty reasons are either "I hate the art" (which has literally always backfired on me, I should realize this by now - it just makes me late to the fandom) or hype aversion, which is so fucking real and I hate it but at the same time, I have to admit it has protected me from some pretty meh stuff that I would not have gotten fully fandom-involved into anyway. there is nothing I revisted later and had regrets that I missed out.

+1 to hype aversion. It lasted through my teenage years and I still have it.

Hating the fanart is less a thing for me for whether or not I get into a fandom, but art style?

A few cartoons I got into late because I was put off by the art style but wound up enjoying the writing... so it's not a dealbreaker there. But for video games? ABSOLUTE dealbreaker. I loathe Stardew Valley's art, it's just so ugly to me. And 'farming sims that will let me be gay' is my favorite genre, but every time I look at it, it's just... and then I get irritated when it shows up on my dash and I know it's petty, and I'm glad my friends can enjoy it, but I'm really grateful they don't try to convince me.

A friend of mine wanted me to watch Suits but the idea of a dude deciding he was too special for law school/the bar exam made me so angry. Thing is, this is just my interpretation of the concept based on very limited information. I have no idea if I'm actually correct or not.

That’s not quite how the guy ends up being a lawyer without attending law school (it’s sort of accidental and not really his own plan)… but there is absolutely a recurring theme of Mike (the not-a-lawyer) and Harvey (his mentor) just ignoring laws because they’re **too special** to play by the rules.

I love Prince's music but when he first started getting famous I was put off by his image. I have known for a long time that's dumb and petty though.

Not so much a "fandom", but I remember back in the day I had zero interest in Chrono Trigger because I heard people saying it was better than Final Fantasy, and I was like "THAT IS BS NOTHING IS BETTER THAN FINAL FANTASY." I mean, I was in my teens.

(And I still don't think it was better than most of the FFs, but that's a pretty high bar in my case, and it's a good game in its own right.)

Oh man, if this was an Olympic event, I’d be the reigning gold medalist. I nope out of so many fandoms because of some petty reason or a bad first impression or dumb takes on Tumblr or just seeing “too much” fandom squee over things I don’t like. (No judgement - people are free to like what they like but sometimes it’s easier to not get into a fandom that you know will be rife with fic/art/meta that you disagree with.)

The only specific example that comes to mind right this second is Star Trek Discovery. I was considering checking it out at one point and read a summary that said something about the main female character being named Michael and that being something that the writer does frequently and it flipped some kind of switch in my head. “WHAT THE FUCK THAT IS SO STUPID WHY WOULD YOU EVEN DO THAT WHAT A STUPID TROPE TO INSIST ON INSERTING IN YOUR WORK FUCK YOU NO” To this day, I cannot explain why this pissed me off so much. It still does, and I have never before or since cared about whether a character’s name was appropriately male or female. (I think I’m just hugely annoyed at a writer insisting on doing it repeatedly because…edgy?)

Of course, then I found out whose foster sister she was supposed to be, and I noped out even harder which was its own knee-jerk judgy decision, whoops. Given what I have heard about the show, I made the right choice, because I would have hated it.

Michael has occasionally been used as a female name before. My mom had a female friend named Michael, and there are at least a few female celebrities named that. Though they might have changed their names as celebrities do, I know my mom's friend didn't.

Or was it just that writer's repeated use of "mostly male name for a woman" as a pattern that bothered you? Fair enough in that case, but they didn't invent the idea of women named Michael.

Michael as a woman's name doesn't bother me at all, but my own petty reason for not watching Discovery is that the Klingons look ugly as fuck. I'm cool with both the TOS and the TNG/DS9/VOY versions of Klingons, but I absolutely could not handle them in Discovery.

Game of Thrones.

I remember I was hype about the world building back in 2010, but by the time the show was finally ready to premiere, I think I was being a hipster about it and was like eh. Too mainstream. No thanks. Lol

It took me forever to begin appreciating film from the 1970's in part because I hate the fashion from that decade.

If there’s a sacred cow/Waifu character in it that the fandom coddles or enables despite there being legitimate reasons for someone to dislike or disagree with said character. There’s a character in a particular piece of canon for my main fandom that I have an unpopular (but supported by canon) interpretation of and that means I won’t do fanfic or even discuss it because of the overly defensive fans.

Not exactly a fandom, but extremely petty: I can't watch one youtuber (can't remember the name right now) because I really hate her make up
