Wait wait wait wait wait. I swear to God I'm not being snarky here - there are new people entering the GITS fandom because of the ScarJo movie?

Yup. It was a major movie with a major star in it, lot of people came into the fandom and knew nothing about the controversy or all the other old arguments.

I mean, it underperformed pretty significantly at the box office, no? Compared to expectations, I mean. It did worse at the box office than Valerian and the City Of A Thousand Planets, which came out the same year, and AFAIK that's not really bringing people into a fandom. IDK it just surprises me.
