Which isn't surprising considering it's set pre-WWII?

Honestly, I don't care if it's 'propaganda' - it's a fun series with characters I like, and I'm going to continue enjoying it, just like people enjoy that dreadful 'Handmaid's Tale' and serial killer shows and etc.

So you are okay with it being written by a Tory Peer, who is active in the Tory Party, and sits as member of The House of Lords, writing a piece that is designed to make people feel affection for the pre WW2 social order, and reinforce those norms within it as opposed to modern Britain? would you be so blythe if it had been one of Putin's lackey's writing pro-Soviet era fanfic too? Because it is the same damn thing, it is quasi-state backed propaganda. Are you so blind to the damaging social effects? I hope that, going forward, whether you like it or not, this conversation makes you look at it with even a slightly more critical eye.

Not being British, no, I'm not really all that worried about what the 'Tories' are doing - I'm a little more concerned about the fuckheads in my country who are shoveling guns out to people and then getting pissed off when we call them out on it while standing over the graves of YET MORE DEAD CHILDREN.

Well let me explain, the Tories are the same as the Trump-Republicans just with a posher accent and castles instead of golden lavatories. Boris Johnson, the asshole-in-chief/Prime Minister, even wrote a press article after our last school shooting, Dunblane, lamenting the tightening of UK gunlaws in response ( https://fullfact.org/online/boris-johnson-dunblane-guns/ ). Downton Abbey is the legitimisation of his whole ideology and the same grip around the throat of British society as the Trumplicans have on America.

DA premiered in 2010 and ended in 2015 - hardly stumping for BoJo.
If you really think this show is a sinister plot to undermine your country, well - I really can't help you.

Your last school shooting was in NINETEEN NINETY-SIX. Ours was TWO DAYS AGO. Sorry, but I've got more to think about here than if a cancelled tv series is brainwashing the masses of the UK.

They really aren't.

Was about to say just that: sometimes, a show from one place gets popular worldwide among people who have no idea that it's propaganda because they don't know the history of the place that produced it (and they have no obligation!). I (not British) have a friend who loves this show, and she is no fascist (a bit of an anglophile though). I never had any interest so this is going to be my idea of the show now. But people will be exposed to different ideas coming from different places, and I am sure F!S is not where most people go for information. This show is selling an idea to the world at large who has no idea of what Tory Party is (and shouldn't!). The critics should also be, well, critical of it.

This show ended in 2015 - it was hardly waving flags for Boris Johnson, as he wasn't PM until four years later. I'm aware of what/who Tories are, but, being American, have a little more interest in my own politics than in those of the UK.

AYRT - being from a non-anglophone country I truly have no idea. Not sure how much my friend who actually cares about this show knows, either.

And there's not a thing wrong with that. It's an entertaining show with some good characters showcasing a particular point in history. That they've taken a little license here and there for dramatic purposes (I doubt many lady's maids had babies in the lady's chambers), and given it an over-all rosy glow (it's not the 'Breaking Bad' of series), is hardly to be wondered at.

Other Anon seems to have seething hatred for Tories, which isn't surprising, but their spillover into DA as the worst possible show ever is a bit much.

Oh do bore off. It's TV, not a bloody civics class. You'd do better to complain about so-called reality TV. Now that is selling a harmful fantasy.
