I didn't know crap about RP when I got involved (I'd only had a regular LJ for two months) and it wasn't hard to pick up.

I don't know about which games you'd be looking into joining, but MY home game is rather welcoming and is very good to newbs. Anyone who is honestly asking for help/advice will get it from my fellow players and me...I'm not usually the hand-holding type but I like it when people are honest about wanting to learn, instead of assuming they know the ropes when they don't and just flailing all over the game.

You don't really need it. I joined my first LJRP a year ago without even lurking in fandom like you did and I picked it up easily enough. Most games have a wiki or an info page or something that tells you all you need to know.

I was an extreme closet lurker, and then I spent a long time lurking at a dressing room to see how it was done before I joined. DRs are low-key and a great way to learn the ropes, as well as make fandom friends, and they're tons of fun whether you stay there or go on to more regulated RPs.

Riddler isn't lame - he always wins. He's an egotistical self-absorbed attention-seeking type of guy with a slight oc about riddles - as long as you answer the riddle he wins, because he got Bats to pay attention and play the game, and if Bats can't answer the riddle, Eddie's proven he's smarter than him, and he gets away with the goods.

And if you ignore the riddle outright, he just ups the stakes next time.

That's how I always figured the Riddler would work, anyway.

I was in exactly that position a few years ago, OP! And it sure doesn't feel that long. But eventually I came across a game that just clicked with me, and I really didn't have much trouble just jumping in. (It's a big game, too, with a high activity level and a notoriously intimidating application process -- not what you'd expect to be the easiest choice for a newbie. But it totally worked, and I'd never done LJ RP or fandom RP in my life.) So I think if you keep looking around, seeing what's out there, and watching what other people do, you may well find your niche.

But of course, getting someone to help you can't hurt either. Even if you don't find an outright mentor, getting people talking about their experiences and the world of LJ RP as a whole ought to be good for you. You might want to seek out other places where many games are discussed too, although... those tend to be either idle or wanky.

Awww, OP! Ummmmmmm trying to help: a lot of people lurk around over at RPS, and though, yeah, it can be a total wank pit at times, it's also full of roleplayers who are largely very approachable.

Also, there was an "I Role Play! Do You?" meme not too long ago: http://syerin.livejournal.com/182186.html You could try poking around for some people with similar fandoms, and then talk to some of them!

If it helps, I had no idea what the hell I was doing, either, when I first got into it. My first suggestion would be to find a game that has a premise and characters that you like. rpg_listing is a pretty good place to start, if you're unfamiliar with the games that are out there.

(Also, because I can't help pimping my game: entranceway is a fairly small, but active game, and everyone is super friendly and welcoming.)

IT'S LIKE I COULD HAVE MADE THIS except I'm pretty sure I understand LJ RPing okay, it's just I'm so completely out of touch with fandoms. I really don't even lurk much. I kind of just watch/read/play the canon and that's the end of it. Pretty much the only time I visit comms is when I don't understand something about canon, or when I need dls for something or other. And then I'm like... "All these people seem to know each other... and they're really active on LJ and in their fandoms... :|" It is like this strange foreign world to me.

Aww, I wanna help. SO I GIVE YOU:

Basic terms used in LJRP and their meanings!! (Some terms have double meanings)

Mun (short for "mundane") = You; the player

Muse and/or Pup (short for "puppet") and/or Char = the Character you've chosen to play.

IC = In Character. This means you are writing/playing as your character. It can also mean the way you are playing your character is in line with his/her/its widely known canon history/personality.

OOC = Out Of Character. This means you are speaking as yourself and not as your character. It can also mean that you are playing your character in a way that doesn't resemble his/her canon very well.

OC = Original Character. A character you or someone else created and is not an official/copyrighted character. Many games don't allow these. Some do.

Multifandom and/or Panfandom RP = Roleplay communities that accept characters from many different fandoms. There are also single fandom communities but they aren't as popular these days as multifandoms.

Log = A series of third person responses made between two or more characters in a given situation. These can be long or short and are typically where your characters do most of their interacting. Logs can be done via IM service or in LJ.

Tag/Tagback = a reply or comment

CR = Character Relations

God mode = This happens when you control someone else's character that is not yours without the other player's permission. RP rule number 1 is Do Not God Mode. Keep in mind that RP is not like writing a joint fanfiction; you are not allowed to control any characters that are not your own (unless you have permission from the other character's mun.)

NPC = Non-Playable Character; basically a character that no one is allowed to play. They can be a designated character played by a mod or they can be background characters that are at your disposal. It varies.

Crack = RP that is purposely meant to be funny/not taken too seriously.

Just pick an RP to lurk at, read the logs and commentspams of the characters that interest you, see what to do and what not to do. DRs are also a good way to go. (I'M SECRETLY BEGGING PEOPLE TO JOIN THIS DR *FLAILS TOWARD ICON*)

Actually, if you want the ultimate RP, I highly suggest roleplayedingly. Go there, and you will UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING. And laugh a lot.
