His whole narrative arch was about making a new home after an unrecoverable loss. Going into the past destroys the whole thing and makes his journey meaningless.

I feel that way, too. But the alternative viewpoint is that you've misconstrued the nature of Steve's narrative arc. I suspect that's what the Endgame writers would say. They clearly thought the end they gave him concluded his narrative arch, which strongly implies they viewed Steve's arch differently than we do. *shrugs*
