Bonus frustration for me is that sometimes I'll see a post that does have good things to say about A Problematic Thing In Dracula but it will have been dogpiled by people who demand that these things be conveyed in only the most black and white way possible....

I can't bear to kiss or make out when I'm sick because I'm usually all congested, with a runny nose and/or a hacking cough and I'm breathing through my mouth. Not attractive!

In real life, this is really, really gross and I have zero desire to kiss anybody when I’m sick, but I have to admit that I kinda like it in fanfic as long as it’s something like a kiss on the cheek or forehead (never the mouth) with promises of a better kiss when the character’s all better.

It's only cute/romantic in the sense of the person who isn't sick has been a bit stuck up/resistant, and when they admit their true feelings that motion of kissing the person who is sick is them saying, "Look at me! I like you so much I'm willing to get sick to get to kiss you!"

I think that's vital to why this trope works for me. If it's just another, "I think it's romantic that couples will kiss even if someone is sick" there's less investment from me as a reader. Like, IMO you didn't work as hard for the payoff.

I read one of the sequels when I was really young. I recall NOTHING about the book except I thought Juniper was a badass because that name has stuck with me for decades as a name I love. I think a few years ago I thought of looking for the book but I never bought it. Finding out how rare it is, I might buy all the book series and re-read it! Thanks for the reminder, OP! I can't guarantee I'll be that person you can gush with, but wow! I hadn't thought of this book series in a long time, thought it'd be another random book/series I enjoyed as a kid that doesn't go anywhere outside of my random memories and I do random searches!

So, it might not be your cup of tea, but....

A good way to dip your toe into that sort of thing might just be finding a group of people and roleplaying to just really kinda work on your grasp of the tone and the like? At least I've found that's helpful for me in the past.

I'm also saying this because I would absolutely love to write in a roleplay like that myself now that you've unintendedly put the idea into my head. I might not be a woman, but I can definitely be bothered by the way they're often represented in stories. (I loved a Fix it fanfic for MDZS where part of the key fix was to really lean into Yanli's character and give her just as much power and voice as the guys. 10/10 Yanli was criminally underutilized in canon.)

So uh.... I guess this is now also a general "does anyone want to get together and write original ancient magical people with me?" now.

PS: Good luck OP! Regardless I'm rooting for you and I'm definitely in a similar boat.

I think his ending was ok. I think I'm just kinda salty about the fact that with Civil War we never got a "real" Cap 3 and some things just felt so unfinished.

Aso it felt kinda sucky for him to go back right after he got Bucky back...for the second time.

I think it would have been a good ending, eventually. But as it was a lot of things seemed unfinished and cut short. While I feel that Tony did get his full arc (and people sort of bent backwards to give him that).

I think you're right. Of course they want closure. But it's like with bullying, sometimes the advice to tell the bully that they're hurting you and being mean backfires horribly because it's based on the idea that they didn't *know* that already.
