Um, doesn't it work, though, to a certain extent? I mean, it may be hit-and-miss, but if the police/FBI are trying to get further victims' names and/or locations of remains, it seems like that might be better than just hoping to eventually stumble across remains. Ted Bundy did confess to more after his appeals process was exhausted (he also made a supposition about The Green River Killer that turned out to be true). Or did you mean before any trial/conviction? Because if so, then I agree that expecting them to incriminate themselves is stupid.

I think just the idea that someone would want to 'help', and then they do this whole 'you could let the family have closure' kind of nonsense.... Meh.
In 'real life', I think Bundy and one other did help, but they are probably exceptions to the rule and ( as you said, all appeals were exhausted - that took years).

It's just never seemed like any sort of go-to method.
