(Anonymous) 2022-05-31 02:46 am (UTC)(link)He IS the same Steve, but he is also fifteen years older and more experienced, as is she. Maybe that will prove to be an insurmountable distance for them, but maybe it won't.
The Steve she fell in love with is both in the ice AND standing right there, fifteen-years-older and only slightly worse for wear. Both of those things are simultaneously true.
There is nothing saying he isn't fighting the good fight with Peggy (and Bucky). Peggy obviously is nowhere near retirement at that point in time; why would Steve be retired? He's still young! There's lots to do! "CIA Agent Peggy Carter and Future Avenger Steve and Rescued & Rehabilitated Bucky plus/minus Freshly Thawed Soldier Steve all team up and work together to make a better future for humanity" sounds pretty awesome, honestly. I'd watch that tv show.
The only significant reason I still don't like it is because Steve still left "our" Bucky behind, which doesn't seem like something he'd do--especially not while Bucky is still really traumatized and struggling to get his footing in the world.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-31 03:02 am (UTC)(link)No, it's because the writers have to conform to the idea that romantic love is more important and consuming than any other kind, and they backed themselves into a corner.
Steve and Peggy hadn't even been on a DATE and she is somehow more important to him than the people he's fought with and bled with for much longer than he was with the Howlies, not to even mention Bucky, who did both? Absolutely not. It's character assassination in the service of stopping the icky gays from latching on. There's no way to have Steve and Peggy of the same universe together without it being horrifically toxic or character assassination.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-31 03:23 am (UTC)(link)So he stays because he wants to be in a time that feels more like home to him, and to be with Peggy.
It's not like he has a lot of super close relationships in the present. He has work friends. Very good work friends that he cares about, but work friends nonetheless. Work friends and Bucky. Bucky is really the one glaring problem with the whole thing, as far as I'm concerned.
