So, it might not be your cup of tea, but....

A good way to dip your toe into that sort of thing might just be finding a group of people and roleplaying to just really kinda work on your grasp of the tone and the like? At least I've found that's helpful for me in the past.

I'm also saying this because I would absolutely love to write in a roleplay like that myself now that you've unintendedly put the idea into my head. I might not be a woman, but I can definitely be bothered by the way they're often represented in stories. (I loved a Fix it fanfic for MDZS where part of the key fix was to really lean into Yanli's character and give her just as much power and voice as the guys. 10/10 Yanli was criminally underutilized in canon.)

So uh.... I guess this is now also a general "does anyone want to get together and write original ancient magical people with me?" now.

PS: Good luck OP! Regardless I'm rooting for you and I'm definitely in a similar boat.

Seconding this!

In that case, while I don't specifically want to set out to write women... (though they're more than welcome and I love playing multiple characters so wouldn't mind having at least one or two to play myself)..... wanna rp with me random anon? We could maybe whip up a general setting and then, idk make a musebox or something unless you'd prefer starting out with bakerstreet or whatever the place du jour is right now?

There's some strong fMC cdramas as well but some of them are not that popular. They go BL path for a stronger 'f' lead, having a guy to do all the things a strong female lead'd do in western media.

I'm in a similar boat, minus the wuxia, and I'm currently planning a historical fantasy lesbian romance (where they get to actually be together and not die or marry men!) out of sheer spite, so I am very much rooting for you.

if you (or anyone else reading this) wants to explore something like this, you also need to look into contemporary gender issues in china and east asia - and i don't mean 'confucian gender roles where women are relegated to household things only' but actual issues faced by women in that part of the world today, and how they (women) themselves view and interact with these issues. what women in china want from gender equality can be vastly different from how a western audience would assume it.

i keep running into fics where the outlook on gender roles is so blatantly western it drives me absolutely bonkers.

I don't think you need to look into contemporary issues if you want to write a story inspired by historical/wuxia settings. Most cdramas in those genres have tons of fantastical elements anyway and have little to do with modern chinese issues.

how is one to write a fantasy story centered around chinese female characters if they don't know anything about perceptions of femininity and gender from a chinese perspective?

I honestly don't see anything wrong with using historical or wuxia settings and tropes and putting your own spin on it... It's fantasy, not a realistic story about Chinese women set in modern China. And it doesn't sound like OP would go around claiming their novel is "culturally authentic" and being an authority on Chinese culture or something like that.
