Starting a Webcomic- How to fend off antis

(Anonymous) 2022-05-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope I don't upset anyone here but...

I've finally started setting up and establishing a host and planning a rather adult oriented webcomic. I have a warning at the front of the webpage but as I'm writing the comic page FAQ/Before You Read, i'm trying to think of how to fend off perhaps a certain kind of commenter. The kind who complains if a character isn't explicitly punished enough for being "problematic" or people who claim that I'm endorsing or 'normalizing' things by writing about/drawing about them.

The comic has an adult content warning, and all the characters involved are fully adult age. Beyond that I don't feel like I have any other responsibility whether it be to properly spell out who's evil and good, or properly spell out what's right and wrong. I'm telling a story here. and I just don't wanna deal with the grief of people nitpicking if my comic should be allowed to exist or not.

How can I nip this in the bud in my FAQ page?

tbh I personally feel like you making a big deal of it before it ever happens is more likely to MAKE it happen?

Like, I just wouldn't mention it at all. It comes off as judgy before anyone reading your comic has done anything to be judged for. No one wants to be pre-judged by a FAQ.

Good point. I'll just address it if it comes up. I will warn of the themes and such in the comic that may bother people. But I'll avoid mentioning anything about anti behavior unless it happens.

I'd say have a hands off approach to the fandom and have a very "I said what I said" approach to your own content. If you make yourself approachable and accessible people will be more likely to try and get something out of you. Creators trying to play nice with the fandom is sweet but it's also sort of like the mom that's trying to be her toddler's bestest friend in the whole world and now that toddler is smearing their diaper shits on the fabric couch.

Antis always go for people they can have an effect on, that they can manipulate emotionally. If you remain cool and dispassionate then you're not an easy target. I know this from experience.

+1

Also, it's not like you can control people's reactions and what they think and what they will want to say. There will always be detractors to any and everything. It's up to you to engage with criticism or not. Are you planning on having a comment section or something? Because if you eliminate that, you'd be nipping it all in the bud. Granted, someone can make a subreddit, a forum, whatever -- or share on Tumblr or wherever you'll have it, but again, I'll agree with this poster (re: interaction) and the poster before, who made a good point imo about you're being super concerned about something that's not there yet (if it will ever come -- to which I'd say everyone's gonna have an opinion, and with the internet, we can all share it with the world, not much you can do really).

Ah fair thanks

I didn't think it through. I really don't wanna eliminate all comments just ...I dunno I don't wanna be accused of a bunch of shit .
