I used to like r/FanFiction as somewhere to talk (and vent) about FanFiction tropes. You could talk about thinks you didn't like and everyone was pretty chill: no bashing of people who do like that thing, no naming of specific works or authors, etc.

But now there's always someone chiming in to say you shouldn't post negative opinions, specifically because writers might see your post and feel bad about their work.

On some level, I get it. I can be pretty sensitive about my own stuff. But it's supposed to be a place for all kinds of FanFic discussions -- not primarily for supporting writers. Readers shouldn't have to worry about the sensitivities of self-doubting writers when they voice their opinions.

I can feel myself getting bitter all the positivity. FFS, let readers put whatever they want in their bookmarks. Let readers write honest reviews, even if they're negative. The next time someone makes another "why isn't my fic getting kudos?" post, I really want to respond with "maybe people just don't like it?"

I'll probably just leave the subreddit, but I'll miss having somewhere to actually discuss FanFic instead of only reading it on my own.

Yeah, there doesn’t seem to be a space in fandom now where you can really dig into what worked and what didn’t in a particular fic. Digging into what worked and what didn’t is pretty much how I engage with fiction, so . . .

All the posts about comments in bookmarks are so annoying. Bookmark comments aren't for authors! And half the time the bookmark comments people are upset about aren't even mean, they're just not 100% gushing.

It's basically the same kind of posts everyday. Complaints about this, complaints about that, bookmarks this, bookmarks that. It is annoying and I enjoy the few posts that are actually worth clicking on and replying too.

But at the same time r/AO3 is also getting pretty annoying with the constant talk about stats and overvaluing kudos and views.

When I joined these subreddits I thought I would find places where I could discuss anything fanfiction related in a civil manner but that is sadly not the case.

The exact same thing happened to the fanficrants community on LJ years ago - a community explicitly FOR ranting, and you would be chastised for being negative!

It just seems to be the way things go.

So frustrated by Fringe fans' attitude to Anna Torv's acting. The consensus is that she was "wooden" and "flat" in the early episodes.

But I think she absolutely nailed the character of Olivia: a buttoned-up govt agent with childhood trauma.

Secretly, I suspect that many of the complaints about her early acting are because of an expectation that female characters are emotionally open and expressive.

People only seemed to appreciate the acting once Olivia started to relax and open up. Then fans *really* praised Torv when she played the sassier and more playful AU version of the character.

Most of the people Wu Xie is fond of have nearly gotten him killed at some point or other, that isn't really germane to the 'love interest' debate.

...

... I wouldn't call her a love interest either, but, from the way he talks about her in later parts of the story, she's someone that matters to him? He describes her as a friend in Sand Sea and I think that's fair.

Hm. Well, do big heterosexual male-led military action movies still get big slashy fanbases? I mean I hope for your sake that they do, but it doesn't seem to be a common thing that happens anymore.

Also re this movie.... on the one hand, I like the look of it and there aren't enough big splashy action-adventure stories and also who is she and I am looking respectfully; but on the other hand, yeesh, it's made by Netflix and directed by the author of the original book and it's his first time directing a feature film so.... that doesn't seem like a great sign. Much to consider.
