Back during the LJ days, I was part of a fanfic book club for my main fandom at the time, and it was honestly pretty great. It was a pretty old fandom and a lot of the fics we were discussing were a decade old, which probably helped keep the whole thing from getting too controversial, but we discussed some fics by authors who were still active and it was still fine, despite the fact that we didn't really hold back when it came to discussing the parts that hadn't worked for us.

I have longed for a similar book club in every fandom I've been in since then, but I really can't imagine it now, in the current fandom climate.

Not that I think writers should have to take concrit if they're not looking for it. I just think there is a difference between someone sending you unsolicited concrit and actively going to a place where you know concrit is going to be and seeking it out.
