My experience with Reilly was 7 Deadly Wonders and 6 Sacred Stones, so I gotta ask: is the weird villains-only racism a typical thing for him?

(Seriously, every villain is some kind of national stereotype, even the white ones! Even the ones who’re from the same country as nuanced heroes who aren’t stereotypes!)

To be honest, the Jack West novels are my least favourite works by Matthew Reilly.

All of his novels are written in the same style. They're just meant to be big and exciting like an action movie on paper. I guess in that way they also fall into the same tropes as action movies both good and bad.

Not all of his stories have the same style of villain though. You could try reading some of his stand-alone stories. Contest is Reilly's first published novel and its also a good place to start if you want something very different from The 7 Ancient Wonders.

That is a very fair and valid criticism, and also a big part of the reason why the Jack West books are my least favourite of his too. I don't think it's quite as bad in his earlier books. I agree with the other anon here that contest is a good read - the villains being aliens certainly removes the ability to rely on national stereotypes.

As for the Scarecrow novels, they still lean heavily on action tropes - none of his villains would be out of place in a bond movie, I reckon - but maybe it's because the bad guys are all white, it doesn't feel as bad. And to be fair, I'm not sure his heroes really do have much more nuance haha. This is the guy who once said his characters didn't live long enough to justify any character development after all... which does make them a great blank slate for fandom though ;)
