There's an old British sitcom called The Good Life, and one episode called The Last Posh Frock. In it Barbara, who has gamely gone along with her husband Tom's harebrained idea to become self sufficient in the suburbs, wants to feel pretty and feminine for a bit after being considered "one of the blokes" so she puts on her Last Posh Frock. It rips on a nail Tom said he'd fix. He tells her it doesn't matter.

I was ten, hated dresses, and I cried for her. I still cry at that episode. It was so unfair.

I'm not a huge fan of dresses and I didn't care for that dress in particular, but I still tear up when I watch it (I have it on DVD - the whole series is available from BBC or Acorn, under the title Good Neighbors).
