it can go both ways.

as a massive halo fan that has some gripes with the tv show, r/halo has become an intolerable place, and has even leaked into r/halostory. i am not exaggerating when i say those subreddits have devolved into accusing anyone of being remotely positive about halo of being a shill, and sending death threats to writers, developers, actors, anyone involved in the ip.

i think it explains the sudden movements to allow only positivity. some mods are genuinely terrified of similar toxicity festering, that they prefer to nip it at the bud. which is another problem, but one is more likely to end up with anger metastasizing into becoming a hate subreddit.

another anon mentioned there should be places you're allowed to be openly negative, but i respectfully disagree. i think people should be allowed to be negative under a modship that allows it in balance. an ip should be rightfully criticized when they screw up, but it gets honestly really fucking exhausting when all of a subreddit is dedicated to hating on a canon and harassing anyone that confesses to genuinely like the newer stuff.

In sincerity though, "under a modship" requires consistency and impartiality regarding rules enforcement- I've seen way too many forums implode due to favoritism of users, rules, and canons. A lot of fannish mods are incapable of maintaining the necessary distance.

And if the mods are ignoring harassment...
