And I bring it up because most people will say 'I don't have an accent' whether they're from the US, Uganda, or Ireland. It's how people *are*, and sure, with some bigoted asshats it's malicious, but with most people it's a feeling that they just sound boring and plain, and everyone else sounds interesting (or cute, or sexy).

I guess there's always going to be someone here who takes a mild discussion and turns it into 'but that's problematical!!'.

Please have the last word, I'm so done.

Can't comment on other languages, but I've known a lot of English speakers from a lot of different countries, and I've never heard the "I don't have an accent but yours is so cute" routine from anyone other than Americans.

I can comment on other languages. Dutch specifically. And it’s not an American only thing at all.

I doubt it’s only an American thing for English as well. Despite your anecdotal experiences.

I'm guessing it's not uncommon for people whose own accent is also basically the only one they ever hear in films and television in that language, unless a character is being specifically marked out as foreign or from a part of the country with a very distinctive regional accent. So it probably depends on how much accent diversity appears in your media, which definitely does vary depending on the language and country. If you only rarely hear any other accents I suppose it's easy to end up believing the way you talk is normal and anyone who sounds different has this quaint accent thing that you don't have, whereas that's not going to happen when you're regularly exposed to a variety of accents.

See the comment right below this one, from a F!S person who is Dutch.

lol what kind of care bear utopia do you live in where "most people" think their own thing is boring and any sort of difference is viewed positively?

I dunno, the one that's my reality? Sorry you're surrounded by hateful, ugly people.
