I feel sorry for all the people who bought tickets to see Mulaney and then got sucker-punched like this.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
For real.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I guess the lesson is "don't buy tickets to Mulaney again".

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Used to love his work, but he’s undeniably going mask off.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious, wouldn't the tickets include all acts to be performed? Like I'm assuming Dave didn't just jump on stage randomly, but I'm not familiar enough with how comedy clubs work. He's still a big name even though he's faded so not billing Chappelle wouldn't make sense?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know myself but apparently he was a "supprise opener", so I guess not.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing with Dave is that he's clearly past his best as a comedian - to be clear, I thought this was true before any of the transphobic stuff happened, his material since his comeback just has not come close to what he did at his peak - so playing to a combination of older millenials and Gen X-ers nostalgic for the time when he was the best comedian on the planet and easily satisfied bigots is clearly a good career move for him.

John Mulaney is weirder because it does not make any sense for him to do any of this from a career point of view, so the only explanation is that he's doing it because it's some point of principle for him, and more generally because he's a standup comedian and most if not all standups are scumbags who cannot be trusted.

Chapelle is indeed past his prime (his last special did not have a lot of laffs and was, oddly boomer-humor) but the problem for him is also that his show/ensemble was good and his standup isn't.

It bums me out because there are quite a few no-name junior comedians out there funnier than Chapelle, and this douche gets the million dollar specials $$$.

His early 00s standup specials are really, really good. Especially Killin' Them Softly. He was legitimately a great standup in his prime.

yeah I'm genuinely baffled by the choices Mulaney has been making. I mean, some of them can be explained by drugs, but not so much this one

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know what kind of show it was?
Like I can't imagine Mulaney's hiring all the people himself at any rate, but depending on where it was (like a club or a stadium), or even the type of show it was (festival, multi-person event or solo), I doubt he had much if any decision on what was going on at all.

I know that my understanding of the business side of comedy is definitely outdated, but I can't imagine so much has changed for it to be all wrong? (i'm honestly not sure though which is why I ask, tbh;;)

(Anonymous) 2022-06-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Still waiting to see how many death and rape threats he'll get. Should be interesting.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck off

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
...?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the fuck off. Your attempts at trolling and shit-stirring are transparent and pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
?????

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's trolling? It's literally the closest barometer we have to assess how much misogyny has influenced the reaction to JKR. That's interesting as hell to me

DA

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well the problem with your little study is that misogyny and transphobia overlap so much it's impossible to seperate them.

Individuals who identify as trans men and non binary are still seen as female by transphobes and "gender criticals" and trans women are of course seen as "men pretending to be women" and delusional and mentally ill , or having some perverted goal bc "what man would want to be a woman?" . And the fact that trans women are just trying to be who they are is disregarded

Might wanna factor that in your study .

But I'm 100% sure you're just being disingenuous.

That's a really useless barometer for several different reasons that should be obvious. I mean just on the absolute most basic level, this is demonstrably an instance in which two straight men are receiving vociferous and vocal criticism for transphobia (or passive support of someone who is transphobic).

I am kind of the opposite: I really don't know or care about Mulaney, but I find myself really disgusted and disappointed in Chappelle. May they both disappear.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well it's past May now, but hopefully in June

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
da

I admit I laughed at this.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say for sure, but I don't believe comedians have the call on who opens for them? They definitely do not when it comes to scheduled/televised gigs, by that I mean a contractual or a sponsored event type of deal.
Chappelle more than likely got the spot through an agent, and there are a lot of situations where people are called in last minute as well. So while he definitely could have known who was going to do his warm-up, in advance or not, there's also very little he could do about it even if he wanted too.

idk, I'd give Mulaney the benefit of the doubt for now. Since comedy is his profession, and if he is struggling, he doesn't have the benefit to be picky about who's hiring, or risk against interacting with a different guest let lone performing after them at all due to personal/political issues.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-04 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not really how things work for people on John Mulaney's level. Mulaney is struggling on a personal level but he absolutely is not struggling on a professional level, he's one of the most popular standups in the world.

But even if that weren't the case, my understanding is that the context of the event made it clear that Mulaney did specifically approve of Chappelle being on the bill. If I recall correctly he came on stage after Chappelle's set finished to give him a hug.
